New UK Sorn laws...??

Ok, to save me the hassle of contacting DVLA, does anyone know how the new sorn laws are meant to affect things that had no need for sorn before.?
Like, say, if you had a bike or car that hadn't been on the road since before sucha time, you didnt need a sorn for it and dvla would not give you one, only for vehicles after that date ( either tax em or sorn em)

Are they now saying we need a sorn for every thing regardless of when it was last on the road.
Also as a seperate issue, if you have a vehicle that IS taxed but not insured you are meant to get that sorned now.

I am confused, but dont want me vehicles crushed and a big fine.. or a small fine.

Everyone has good intentions, and believes there advice is right, but on subjects such as this its best to check the official website, or call the DVLA.

If it is not taxed or SORNed now then they don't know about it.

Once taxed or SORNed you will have to insure them - all my SORNed bikes are insured anyway (what if the barn burned down?).

My CB350 is currently in a state where it is neither taxed nor sorned because it hasn't been used on a public road since 1995.  In order to get it sorned I would have to insure it,  MOT it, then visit my local DVLA vehicle licensing office and get it registered as an Historic Vehicle.  Then, as is my understanding, should I choose to take it off the road again, I would surrender the tax disc which would put me in a position to register SORN.

My insurers say if its declared on SORN then no need to insure it as the DVLA know its legally off the road.  (If a bike was never in the "system" and off the road then its still does not need insurance). My bikes are always insured whether they are laid up or in pieces - you never know what can happen, a friend had his bike removed from his locked and bolted garage and they cut through a chain lock.  The neighbours never saw or heard a thing!

Graeme's advice is good. Contact Swansea, get your question confirmed in writing. Then if you meet any jobsworths later on you have the answer in writing.

I know it's bad to be even slightly paranoid but cases of Swansea losing/denying peoples class a motorcycle entitlement forcing a retest at worst or loads of hassle at best are very well documented in the motorcycle press.

If you are sorned and the bike or bike in bits whatever it be is off the road then you dont have to be insured, read this link

Thank god that they have eventualy put info up, I would have a nightmare with the stack of V5's i have if it wasn't for the fact they are all before Sorn

After reading yourr post meerkat i checked some of mine and found my Honda st70 was out of sorn, only by a week, so i re sorned it, there was no mention of an offence so i am hoping they will let my mistake go

Hi Pete,
You should be OK, I was even longer with my 400/4 which was SORNed when I bought it.
It failed the MOT just prior to purchase and I left it a short while before having it re-tested. In the meantime the SORN expired and I wasn't penalised although I delayed taxing the bike until a couple of months later.

Thanks guys, So, now if its not insured it has to be sorned.
Soon there will be a law that says I have to sorn myself or something I bet.
