It might be wise to give it another coat of paint after fitting it, tightening will chip the paint.

Its for that reason (like PatM) I welded a stainless nut over the chewed up remains of mine.

That's a very nice repair job and a part well restored.

People often do these up so tight as if their life depended on it when all it needs is to only just compress the O-ring and no more, you can feel it when the filter housing just starts to touch the cases and stop there.

The sump drain plug was also repaired the same way and both have now been re-fitted. The bike's been filled with fresh oil and the engine turned over without firing to avoid getting petrol down the dry bores.
Just waiting for a break in the weather to go for a run in a much easier frame of mind than this time last week.  ;D
