Minor crash, major pain :( cb400f2
« on: September 18, 2012, 05:03:17 PM »
Hi people,
Something terrible has happened, been in my first spill and I've scratched up her lovely exhausts. This is my first bike, only had it for about 4months
and it's brought me many smiles behind my visor. I've posted a pic of the day I got it and also some shots of the damaged pipe. All other damage
is minor and can be fixed easily like grips/ indicator/ etc. I would love to keep it original but does anyone know of someone who can repair this sort
of damage? Is it even possible? Am I better off just getting a replacement replica from DS spares. If I could get the one header pipe is it possible to
cut the damaged one at the collector box and then get it welded and rechromed? Any advice would be great, I do understand though that it's
probably going to cost more to repair it than to find a replica. I can't fork out £400+ on a good original.
Feel like I've committed a crime against all that is good :( Messing up one of the best looking pipes around. If you think that is dramatic, you don't
understand - I LOVE THIS BIKE! Often go to the garage just to look at it!

Anyways, cheers for your thoughts guys,

Jake.

Bugger been there done that.Crash bars are always a wise investment.I do know of someone near me that can make and weld a new header pipe on for a very reasonable price.I'll dig the number out tomorrow.
I too find myself standing in the garage just starring at my bikes.

Yes, that's the first thing I thought when it happened, I saw a 400 with crash bar on and it didn't look that bad actually, too late now!
Mike - would really appreciate that number if you can find it, I don't know how rechroming works, if it needs to be re-done or can you weld small
areas where it gets cut, will see when I get there I guess.

Cheers,

Jake.

In all honesty, ride it as it is and save up for the new set from Dave Silver, repair and re-chrome will cost more as, probably, will stainless.

I've been to John Campbell's workshop in Orpington. He made me some road legal baffles for my Sidewinder exhaust on my Tiger.

Ex IoM sidecar racer from the sixties. Ran Predator exhausts but sold it and retired to the Island. Got bored after 3 years, came back to Kent and re-started an exhaust company (he's now 73-ish).

Lovely chap and a pleasure to see the way he designs and bends headers...

Was he Campbell Geometrics at one time?
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Set/sit. Bought/brought FFS. Bloody Americans.

Maybe. They were in Dartford in the 70's so in the right area.

Don't you just love the interesting info you get from these "hijacked" threads?

As I remember the 400 two of the pipes are part of the collector so that makes it more complicated

Cheers guys,
looks like I will have to leave it for a while if it's going to be mega bucks, can't justify spending too much on it. I will try get a quote from John and see what he reckons,
it says on their site that they don't weld or repair second hand exhausts so would have to go for complete set of headers and collector box if he can do it. DS Spares is looking
like the easiest option and probably cheapest so far, they're out of stock at the moment. Got to fix a couple of small things to get it roadworthy again, (indicator, bent steering,
bent gear shifter - nothing major) and for the moment will look upon these as battle scars!

Jake.

getting used pipes chromed is gonna be hard. as long as they've held their shape well enough not to effect thebreathing of the bike (squashed flat) then just ride it as is, look at it this way, exhausts inevitably rot, it will no longer be such a loss when it does, also less reason to worry / bike to clean and dry in a hurry if it gets wet.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

This one is available on ebay, you might be able to transfer your 1 and 3 pipe on it.
might be worth a go, even as a temporary measure.
reasonable price so far.........

I assume from the lack of a jubilant post you didn't get the eBay item?

But for £113 that wasn't a bad deal at all.

New Silencers are in the region of £80 - £100 and they do rot, so that would have given you a spare, if not you could have moved that on for say £50 on eBay which meant the front pipes would only have cost you around £60, quite a good buy.

Alternatively, you could have put the entire system on your bike regardless of condition, taken yours off and at your leisure had your nice shiny one repaired at a later date or when funds allow......
