Registering a USA import
« on: October 04, 2015, 02:35:16 PM »
Hi guys,

Soon enough I will need start the process of registering my bike.

I have all the docs I need, nova, honda letter, bill and I will have MOT soon (3/4weeks)

What kind of plate would I have? My bike is Oct 1972 would I have the black one? Do I need to request it specially? Also I think it is tax exempt do I need to do something else to request it?

How long would it take since I send the paperwork till I receive the v5? As I don't have a number plate would they give me one?

I'm all lost!

I would appreciate your help

Thanks in advance!!

Noelia - you have my number. Call me and I'll walk you through the process. Once you have the MOT and Insurance cover note (on the vin number) you just need to fill in the V55/5 form (order one from the dvla website now) and once sent  with the £55 first reg fee (cheque) you should have your v5 back in ~7 days. Then it's just a case of having the number plate made (you should be assigned an age related plate). James

Hi James,

I will call you as soon as I have my MOT, what about the taxes?

Thank you!

My old memory tells me that anything registered after 31 July 1972 MUST have reflective Licence plate(s).......I regularly see much newer and very expensive bikes carrying the old style black ali plates with the raised numbers polished....of course they look good but the owners don't realise that an over zealous member of HM Constabulary might impound their bike and get DVLA to confiscate it.

Of course it would never happen.........but would you take the chance just to make your £20K Harley or Victory look a bit 'older'?

This DVLA document says that vehicles made before 1st January 1973 may display traditional 'black and white' number plates (page 10):

So it looks as if you could fit either black or yellow reflective, whichever you prefer.

Noelia - it will be tax free as it's in the 'Historic' tax class. I'm sure you'll be fine with a black and silver plate.

I just ordered a couple of plates from a seller on ebay and the quality is superb. Check ebay item 261930914489

Dont get insurance till you have EVERYTHING else, frame number cover only lasts 30 days(even though you pay for a full year) then you must supply a registration number or loose the rest of your insurance time
