500 on 2 cyls
« on: February 03, 2013, 08:11:08 PM »
hi everyone, i tried to start the 500/4 today after a few months in storage but it was very reluctant to fire up and needed a squirt of carb cleaner. But only fired on cyls 1/4 so i replaced points and checked timing, but still no spark.have checked wiring but now suspect the coil, can they just stop working?
Love the 500 and 550 have a 500 called Lazarus under restoration

It's not unknown, but rare. Have you tried running a new/temp bit of wire from the negative side of the coil to the points/condenser, also a temp live to the positive side?
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

Check the countinuity through the points to makes sure they are not permanantly earthed, and so give now switching to the coils.

AND clean the contact surfaces as if they oxidised there will be limited continuity

Ooops we didn't think of that!

Has anyone sneaked the plugs into the bottom of the oven while sunday lunch was cooking to dry them properley...or is that just a two-stroke trick?
