Steering
« on: December 28, 2012, 08:56:16 PM »
A couple of questions for you knowledgeable chaps. :)

I've noticed on the parts list there are a left and right spacer that should be fitted to the top yoke. They are between the pinch gap that holds the fork in place.
Are these critical as the're missing from mine? Will a stainless washer(what thickness)be ok or should I use something else.

The second question I've partially answered by reading a thread in the 400 section.I've seen this is supposed to be a steering lock but would iy have been originally keyed a like to the ignition(i know you can't now).Although it's a fairly simple bike by design without an owners manual or any paperwork it's pain knowing it had a steering lock or any other features. ???

There should be spacers int the gaps of the top yoke where the pinch bolts go, basically washers with a flat ground on them. They are there to, in theory, stop you overtightening the bolt and breaking the yoke. part number 53235-300-000 which means they are originaly a 750 part.

The steering lock was originaly same key as ignition and seat and last time i looked you could still get a lock set of all three new but it was a bit pricey plus there apear to be some other bits missing!

I have all the workshop manuals along with parts book and PDI and build sheets for the 500 on a CD/DVD(I think it got too big for a CD!) you can have a copy for the cost of postage plus a beer

Couldn't find an answer in the manuals so ...
Just doing the prep before powder coating, does the lock only stay in the by the little grub screw on the barrel as it only protrudes about 1-2mm?

On the picture above there is a small hole under the lock barrel is this for a cover plate to stop dirt getting in the lock?If it is I'll make one as its missing.

I've got the old one out and test fitted the new.
The small pin with the slot cut into it didn't seem enough to hold it in which is why I wasn't sure.

If you look at a parts book you will see a top hat cover with a hole in it the key fits into held on with a rivet into the small hole
