Wiring - what thickness
« on: October 23, 2014, 06:14:28 PM »
Hi Guys
Need to make up some earth leads for rear indicators now that I've got rear stems (thanks to Oddjob). I've mic'ed up the old harness wire (bare) and its 1mm thick. I want to keep the wiring as standard as possible so want to order same thickness wire.  Unsure what to order - when it says 1mm (say on ebay), is it the thickness or the area? If its area, that would mean ordering 2.5mm?
Thanks
Phil

When I was re wiring the rear indicators on my F1 I went to Halfords and bought some green 1.5 mm wire (I think, can't find it in the garage now), did the trick.
Just spotted this as well http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB750-Motor-Cycle-Wire-Multi-Listing-You-Choose-colour-length-/321122810230?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item4ac4693976

Cable/wire is measured in the cross sectional area 1mm2......1.5mm2 ..etc...I suppose you could ascertain the area with micrometer but it would need some sort of equation ....as its just the diameter
Speaker wire is good as it contains many strands .....or pull something out of some flex 1.5mm2 is probably near the size required....

Phil,

The wire has to be of a certain rating... on my 400F (if I remember correctly) the indicators are on a 15A circuit / fuse. In other words, for the wiring to be adequately protected... it has to be of a rating greater than 15A. (If not, it'll 'fail' long before the fuse lets go...& give you headaches finding the fault)

So, can I suggest you simply buy your wire according to the rating, ie go for something 15A or greater.

The below might help... though you may likely find thinner 15A cable elsewhere.

Simon.
