Decided on colour

Its going to be the red pearl 3 stage finish as used on Clio.

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out and will decide whether to use original style decals.

That's a great colour in the flesh Martin. Very vibrant an in-keeping with the 70's flake colour schemes. Nice choice...

Thanks James, Im  always a bit nervous about choosing non standard colours as its expensive to change!  Will post some pics when I get back.

I saw that colour on a Clio abroad greaming in the sunshine and it looked awesome. Thought to myself if I ever do a non-standard colour that would  be the one.

Thought I had better make a start on the oily bits.

Parts of engine are pretty grungy with caked on dirt.

Last CB750 I did selector mechanism had been partially dismantled and took a while to work out where all the bits go.

Cable tied in order to save time on reassembly

2015_0215engine0061 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Put a nut on bolt to hold in correct position
2015_0215engine0064 by nitram2010, on Flickr

2015_0215engine0067 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Bearing end cover screws were very tight but came out with impact driver

2015_0215engine0072 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Alternator rotor bolt was very tight, had to turn air pressure right up using impact wrench to remove.

Bolt to pull rotor off

2015_0215engine0074 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Cable tied starter drive gear to rotor as one way clutch plungers and springs have a tendency to pop out

2015_0215engine0076 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Very strange, as I removed this bolt there was a hissing, I guess thge corrosion process had created pressure.

2015_0215engine0078 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Casing looks quite clean and bearings good

Main bearing journals look good

Overall quite pleased so far as no nasty surprises :)

Got to grips with the switches.

Left hand was sun bleached and dip switch would not move.

004 by nitram2010, on Flickr

2015_0210frame0017 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Had to take horn switch apart to clean contact to get a good resistance reading.

Cleaned the dip switch contacts in situ to avoid problems reassembling

The insides of switches are full of brown dust like the rest of bike.

2015_0210frame0040 by nitram2010, on Flickr

I took apart the indicator switch and cleaned contacts with wet and dry, contact cleaner and ACF50

2015_0210frame0022 by nitram2010, on Flickr

US bikes have extra wiring for marker lights in indicators

Mechanism is fairly simple as U shaped contacts just slide left or right to join together various wires.

2015_0210frame0025 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Vaseline is great for holding contacts, balls and springs in place when reassembling.

Found an old switch with good condition kill switch to replace original

2015_0210frame0001 by nitram2010, on Flickr

2015_0210frame0006 by nitram2010, on Flickr

2015_0210frame0007 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Thought about converting from US spec with lights on all the time to UK spec, but decided to leave original.

Start switch was fiddly as it cuts power to lights on start and switch came apart without me seeing exactly how it went together.

2015_0210frame0037 by nitram2010, on Flickr

2015_0210frame0038 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Cleaned up cases and painted with Simoniz tough black satin.

2015_0219switch0015 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Touched in writing in Humbrol red model paint, fine brush, leave a few minutes then dab off excess with folded kitchen towel.

2015_0219switch0017 by nitram2010, on Flickr

2015_0219switch0018 by nitram2010, on Flickr

I will clean off smudges when dry

2015_0219switch0014 by nitram2010, on Flickr

And finally new PVC harness covers.

Checked all resistances and seems good, next job is to fit to bike :)

Great work on the switch martin, good observation on the fact they sealed the cases upside down as well

Ordered up a made to measure stainless  braided black covered front brake hose £20.

On the K8 there is no splitter/brake switch union and switch is fitted to master cylinder.

Old one measured at 800mm with 30 degree bent on banjo end.

Supplier (furoreproducts.co.uk) advises female bulkhead fitting suitable for concave and convex flare.

I am not fully convinced, but worst case will make up new metal pipe with convex flare.
