Is it possible to see the exact production date from the vin number?

Nope, but if it is a USA import it should have the month and year on the VIN plate.

Hi Peter, if you're missing the vin plate I have a couple of 550's and can see hoe close our VIN'd are to give you a rough date.

Here's your bike's UK twin...(also a US import)

What year is that CB550 listed as??

Nice bike  :)
Just checked, it's from April 74, but because it's imported the papers say December 76.
My problem is that I can get vintage plates for it, but here but only if it was registered before April 76.

Well mine is mfg 4/76 - same as my birthday...and I suspect it has the wrong front fender (should be two stays). My other 550's are two-stay...

You read me like a book James. It was only the K3 and some F's that had the single stay.

:-) knew you'd spotted it ha ha....it'll get a second stay at some point...

Always found it strange that they used the CB500Four frame on these early 550's.

I wrote to Honda, and they wrote back confirming the exact day it rolled off the line.
