After a few goes at this procedure I found what I think is a reliable way to set the float heights !??If you hold the rack of carbs "on end" the floats will not compress the valve springs.If the hinge pins are a bit loose in their posts a small piece of tape will stop them escaping.Tilting the assembly slightly brings the tabs into light contact with the pins so you can gauge each float in turn.I made a plastic height gauge from an old container, a bit like a bridge in shape with a 21(22?) mm cutout.
