Good spot Trigger. I wonder just how much 550 that engine is?( quite likely not? ) I would gladly swap a decent 550 engine for a cb500 one that wasn't too knackered. Looking at it in the light of the engine being a cb500, it is a fair geuss the bits in boxes are the cb550 bits that dont really fit a cb500 or vise versa. The missing engine brackett, wrong cluch etc someone with a similar attidute to me in the mix and match as long as it fits, but with less spare parts in the shed may well have come unstuck playing mix and match. The question is if the engine internals are mix and match or has it just had an engine swap.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

Cluch and engine casings plus a few other internals are significantly different, but other bits do interchange. Power about the same @50bhp cb500 cluch has a bit of a propensity to slip, especially if giving it the beans. Cb500 clutch pushrod a problem to source. The cb550 gearbox is also stronger I would say, having never had a 550 gearbox die but a couple of 500 ones wear out 1st - at very high milage, 200,000 or so out of my sidecar bike.

Quote us the full number on the flat pad RH side top of crankcase, on front of cylinders should be a small flat pad with the CC and finally take off the sprocket cover and post a pic, then us sad people can tell you exactly what you gat and/or need

Right, that's a 550 engine with a 500 sprocket cover, won't hurt but ain't right. If the clutch cover is also 500 that will not work for two reasons:-

(1) there is no way of fitting the 550 clutch operating mechanism
(2) its a different shape at the bottom rear and oil will pee all over the floor!

need some pics of the clutch bits you have, including the cover, preferably removed but you can e mail them direct if you want.

Haven't forgotten your 400 cd just trying to get the stepsons crohns stabilised in order to get time to search the tip sorry study!! will add in the 500/550 one as well
