New 400/4 owner
« on: August 10, 2015, 08:47:49 AM »
Hi everyone, newbie here from Sunderland. I've just started a complete stripdown on a 400/4 restoration project so I'm hoping that someone can help me with spares, local suppliers advice etc.
I had a 400/4 many years ago and thought it would be nice to sort out another one in my old age..... I've restored a couple of Triumph TR6 cars in the past so I have a bit of knowledge. The bike is a '77 F2 model and looks like I'm going to need lots of parts, wheels, engine rebuild, seat exhaust just for starters. I'm also looking for recommendations for suppliers, and services locally.
The bike is almost stripped, first job is to get the frame to the powder coaters in Cold Hesledon.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone
Steve

Welcome... remember Sunderland well in the 70's. Used to walk down to a place called 'Cowies' when the 400/4 first came out, to look at it in the window. Suspect my current one I own came from your neck of the woods too as its MBR XXXP reg.

Your in a good place here for 400/4 advice & banter.

Yes, I remember Cowies on Hylton Road in Sunderland and BR in definitely a Sunderland reg. I believe my old 400/4 is around Carlisle somewhere, it was on ebay a couple of years age does it still exist TFT 354S ?
I'll post some pics of the project along the way and hopefully get some responses.

All the best

Yes that's the road  .. There was also a shop full of old bikes back of the Poly somewhere, owned by a guy called Crozier but he was never there, he was always in the boozer down the road.
Your old bike is MOT'd till 3rd August 2016 and on SORN BTW. Westgate Road in Newcastle was a haven for bikes, don't know if it still is. Harry Woods was the 5-Star Main Honda dealer back then

Hi Steve and welcome. Lots of great support and advice here from people who know lots (that doesn't mean me).

One quick comment for you to use or jettison as you see fit: I decided to paint my frame rather than powder coat it. That was partly as a result of comments received such as 1) they were painted originally 2) it's easier to touch up a paint chip than a powder coat one. The latter point was driven home as I inevitably chipped little (thankfully insignificant) bits during the reassembly.

Best of luck and enjoy the (in garage) ride.

Thanks for the warm welcome, the bike is now stripped and as expected the parts list is growing.... anyone have those motad stainless pipes ? Are they OK and still available ? I have the originals but they're poor and the collector box has rotted badly, not sure if I should reskin the collector box and rechrome or scrap them, if I can get them done I'm expecting at least £300. Bearing in mind I'm not planning to build a show bike, just a nice example I'm leaning towards a new set

Motad seem to sell them through their eBay shop, this is the most recent set that sold:

As Steve suggests Ian may be able to help, or I think Saisei may have one.
