I found this in my sump

Hey guys

In preparation for my first engine start attempt I was draining the oil and checking the sump tray. The oil was ok, no gunk but I found this laying in the tray. I am guessing this is bad new and it means something in my engine has broken down. any ideas what it is?

Looks like a bearing cage? Not sure but not a good thing to find.

 yes i had same problem once years ago i would strip engines for fun then,the days when engines was cheap as chips
 a previous owner had blown the gearbox doing sprints and hill climbs in my case
 i stripped the engine for nothing ,but i had to be sure i spose

Thanks fellas appreciate the response. Second question, I have basic tools, sockets spanners etc, a Haynes manual and a shed! Is it a nightmare of a job to open up the engine, find the offending item and replace it. Or is it do-able for a novice? :-)

You may be able to find a video of someone doing an engine restoration on your model of bike on youtube.

Nice one john will check those out, how hard can it be

You'll need a torque wrench to reassemble it correctly,  not to mention gaskets, Hylomar.  Budget for things that you may find that are worn like the camchain,  snapped bolts,  bearings etc.

I did my first cb550 engine in a shed, stood in a puddle of water with an old sideboard as a workbench. Took a weekend including removing it and putting it back in. These days I would be a bit more carefull being as bits cost more.
