Hi I have a honda CB550 which runs a treat but will not charge. I am fairly new to biking but I understand it could be the regulator or the alternator. Are there any checks I could do first before buying any parts? Would appreciate any help.

Mmmmm, electrical faults are are always a problem to source.

Things to find out.

When running take a volt reading across the battery, if it is greater than 12.5 volts, chances are the it is charging and the battery is knackered. an old battery may charge fully on a mains charger but the bike can not put enough current in to re-charge.

The Haynes  manual chapter 6 has a good(ish) guide on the electrical system.

If the bike starts with a flat battery on the kickstart with the lights off, the alternator is most probalbly fine.

Have fun and let us know what the problem was when you sort it.

having first checked if the alternator is working as per the haynes manual, and that the battery is good( fit a YB12A-A, not the YB12-4A) rip out the regulator and the rectifyer if they are the ond seperate ones and replace with one from a CX500 or CB400 superdream. This is something i have done to ALL 28 SOHC4's i have rebuilt and cured the inherant charging fault with these loverly old babies.
cheers

Hey Slade, that sounds like a good idea.  Do you have any more details (pictures would be cool) of the job. How do the new parts mount and did you have to fab any parts?

Send us something and we will put it in the FAQs.

Slade (It's Christmas - Sounds better when Noddy Holder does it), 28 SOHC's are all of these 550's, have you done this mod on any 750's.

A Howto and a few Pics great.
