cb550 ignition timing

(1/1)

DougVinicombe:
Can anyone help with setting the ignition timing on CB550. Using the manual and MC Mechnais guide I cannot get the timing marks anywhere near. Points & condenser have only done a few hundred miles. If I get1-4 near, 2-3 cannot be got anywhere near and I am using good quality strobe and dwel meter. Is there a special knack????.

Hi Doug,
Are you using the Haynes manual? I changed the camshaft in my 77 550F2 and found that I had to turn the stator almost as far as the slots would allow in order to get the right gap on 1.4. Then I had to go to almost full adjustment on the 2.3 set.. Wierd, because I had marked the stator first and the marks (after setting the camshaft notch and getting compression/valve closing on the right cylinders etc) were nowhere near. I decided that I'd have a go anyway and the bike starts and runs better!

Maybe you just have to keep adjusting and don't be surprised if it looks miles out.

Cheers,
Pete.

The easyiest way to cure that problem is to buy a newtronics (used to be called pirhana) or boyer bransden electronic ignition, costs about

This is a common problem reported by many 350-750/4 owners.
The best response was posted by \"TwoTired\" on www.sohc4.net in the Ignition FAQ.  If I can get a direct link I'll post it.
