New joiner from Surrey
« on: April 22, 2016, 09:56:24 AM »
Hi all,

Have lurked for too long so time for an intro :-)

My K2 has been with me for about 16 years and served me well. Before that, I used to ride a 4 speed SS50 which I still have, but is in need of some TLC.

Swapped engines of the K2 last weekend due to having bashed 2nd gear.. :-) Now that its running smoothly again, I am looking forward to a good riding season.

Will try to attach some pics.

Derk

Hi Steve,

Am based in Epsom - you?

That 'chopper' is an old Puch MV50 2-stroke. Bought it from my neighbour for a tenner when I was 12 and partly restored it. It never ran well though, so one of the many little projects I need to get on with at some point!

Wokingham.

If you are more specific in your profile it stops the "where are you?" questions as it appears beneath your avatar.

Hi,
Your first photograph of your bike looked a bit scary,as if it had a carbuncle on its bum. :-[

A monstrous carbuncle indeed!
Hi Derk, and welcome from me.
I too cut my motorcycling teeth on a 4 speed SS50. Long gone now though.
Mine was red, it didn't have a snazzy paint job like yours (must have added at least 2 MPH to top speed) or what looks suspiciously like a VW beetle rear light.

Thanks guys,

Ah yes, the carbuncle.. :-)

It's a Rickman 'indy tail' and although a bit bulky in th photo, it looks better in the flesh, so might keep it on there.

The VW light is actually the original 'Ulo' light for SS50 delivered new to the Netherlands.

Was your SS red & white or red & orange Chris?

Mine was red tank with white stripes
As I recall the tank colour choices for the 4 speed in the UK were red with white stripes, blue with white stripes or gold with black stripes.
I don't remember a red and orange option although the later 5 speed model could be had with an orange tank.

I like the red&white one. Apart from those mentioned, the black frame SS often came with a red/orange tank in the Netherlands, and there were quite a few funky 70 special paint versions as well.

You got more interesting paint than we did in the UK!
We just got a coloured tank with simple stripes.
Frames were grey on the 4 speed, black on the later 5 speed models.
Mine was like this, even had the front number plate.

I whacked a 70cc head and barrel on my 5 speed ss50, straight through pipe and bigger jets , it went quite well, not as fast as the FS1E or AP50, but being a four stroke it would be better on fuel and go all day at 50 mph where the two strokes would overheat or seize with constant abuse, i would love another one day but i refuse to pay f--ing 3 grand for a good one which is what they seem to fetch
