Ah, i see. I have quite a few to do after 1st April but my local post mistress does it all for me. I just ask her to change to historic , give her the log books and she does it all there and then on the computer....i don't like standing in a queue either, i suffer from queue rage 😀. I know a couple of people who sent their docs of to DVLA about 10 days ago for change to historic and DVLA sent the docs back with the amount to be paid to tax the bikes. Even though they are eligible for historic and FOC tax from April 1st, DVLA wouldn't do them as it was pre April 1st....bloody jobsworths.

interestingly this was something they told me may happen and then gave me a different sa99 post code to send it to saying if i sent the v5c (with historic written in) the v10 showing 1st april start date (and i sent the v112 even though i didnt need to) and this section in dvla would "sort it all out for you".  i may have been a bit naive but only time will tell!!

Reason i asked for frame number is any differences will be on number, should be stamped on lh side of headstack

bit difficult with the thick paint and scratches but looks like cb400f 1086985.

i'm only questionings this as some of the pics i see on the net seem to have a short 'bolt' and some seem to have longer ones - maybe some are screwed out as they would be if locked and some are not!! anyway i appriciate the help.

I will look in my paper parts book tomorrow, frame number and original country would help

my paperwork is with dvla at the moment getting its 'age related' bit.  it is an english bike with the steering lock in the front frame tube like this one i found on the net:
What's the age related bit about at DVLA ?.

as it's now officially classed as 'historic' (from 01/04) you have to fill out section (i think) 7 to change the taxation class so i sent it off with the v10 as i didn't want to stand around in line at a post office.

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB400F0-SUPER-SPORT-1975-USA/part_162365/

Dave Silver used to do an aftermarket one- which I feed as it was a lot cheaper.

i have looked at that one along with others that look the same but since i cannot find it listed on what i (think) is a parts manual for an english bike - and the lower steering lock on a usa/canada  looks the same as the one i need but has a shorter 'bolt' so i'm asking so i do not make a mistake.

since there is a hole where the steering lock should be (into the steering stem - english style) i was wondering if anyone could confirm that 53600-404-611 is correct for a 1978 cb400f?

I have looked at cmsnl site for english version of parts list (and another i found on line) but there does not seem to be any lock on the diagramme!!

i know there are 3 types that fit different versions within different countries , one in the ignition switch, one under the steering stem and my one in the front frame tube but all of the locks i have seen on line seem to have a short 'bolt' that engages so just checking.

thanks

thanks.

i have to admit i was begining to get really annoyed with the 'rich' running (you could hear the engine choaking!!) but that has now gone.

i think the suggestion of " a good set of guages " is central as the ones i bought were 'cheap' and i bought them because many had been sold (according to ebay counter).  dont get me wrong, they worked after a fashion but it was very difficult to stop them bouncing all over the place - even with the plastic 'restrictor' which ment that the needle was either bouncing, sort of slightly flickering or stopped dead.

in the back of my mind was the fact that an expensive set only used a couple of times was not a reasonable outlay  -  may have been a mistake.

anyway, just waiting for the road tax and a bit of sun/dry day  8) and i can give it a bit of a shakedown and make any last adjustments.

ever onwards.

hopefully the 'cheap' one is still available (mce) - bound to be a better one than your current one out there somwhere.

maybe a decent chain and/or some data/marking system to reduce the risk and therefore the cost.

good luck.

Well...it was the cheapest of the three companies on go compare that would have me at all. The AA wouldn't touch me. I've worked in the insurance industy albiet in Life Assurance but i do know I'm in a part of London known to insurers s 'The Bermuda Triangle'....because so much goes missing!!

maybe it would be worth running it throu. gocomp or the like again to see what prices you get quoted now.

if you are only half way into the insurance and given the company prob. charges £50 cancellation but with a new insurance of maybe £200 (asuming your not knee deep in accidents/speeding etc)  then changing would at least give you a reasonable company and you could make yourself £250 without even leaving the house!!

I'm hoping when I go to get a quote from Footman James I'll get better than the £1054 pa I'm paying for tpft now. alas, someone just mentioned Garage, I'm not able to say i have one. But an out the way garage is probably more vulnerable around here than my being in a gated community, there are two enty phones to pass, it's under a ceiling, with a cover over it...in a courtyard with almost 30 nosey neighbours who know who owns the bike. When I go out for a late night jaunt I see people coming to their windows ...a thief wouldn't stand a chance of going un-noticed but alas, that didn't count on my last quote. Only three companies on 'Go compare' would have me at all. I live in Shadwell east London.

at that price someone is taking the piss.  i went to gocomp and said i lived in e12qj with a £3500 bike in a secured parking area (you said locked gates access) with no ncb and only 1 year riding and mce came back at 188 with 50 excess, devitt 442 with another 6 under 500!! i then said no to anything that could give a discount and much to my surprise mce went down to 166??.

of course this is only representative on the day as the quotes don't last more than a few days but it gives an indication.

you need to think about a change at renewal

No such BS from Footman James' on my classic bike or car policies - must be garaged (brick built) overnight at the home address and that's about the only stipulation from what I can read.

Worth a call - link: https://www.footmanjames.co.uk/classic-bike-motorcycle-insurance?msclkid=25704489fb1b1f70b33c180b53d9e040&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Bing%20Classic%20Bike%20Insurance&utm_term=footman%20james%20classic%20bike%20insurance&utm_content=Classic%20Bike%20-%20Footman%20James%20-%20Exact

Cheers
Andrew

i tried them but they were quite high, p james wanted about 140 comp. 10years ncd but a reasonable excess of (i think) 250 and an sp30 with no accidents.  i finally got one from bikesure at 69 (they waived part of their costs) as above but with 50 excess.  if i said ungaraged it was 240! incidently, gocomp cheapest was only 85 (rcib), 87 (bikesure).

i've had motorcycle insurance for some 15 years since i started riding again but i'm no doubt a bit dim as i was not aware, until recently discussing insurance with a few companies, that if you agree you are going to keep the bike in a locked garage then your not insured when you take it out and, say, park it on the drive whilst you get your gear on or the like.  the insurance only starts when you actually start to 'go for a ride'. my company insuring my motoguzzi actually says not insured within 500 mtrs of my home unless i have started to 'ride'.

it seems most of the companies i was talking to do this (the very few that don't charge three or four times more) and i was told all classic insurance policies do it!

who knew or should i have known!?!
