Title: Fitting rubber bits
Post by: mike the bike on October 25, 2020, 02:10:16 PM
I was trying to fit a motor on a Dyson DC14, I usually have to spray the rubber mounting with WD to get it to go in but a customer was whinging about the oily smell.  This time I tried something different.
Alcohol hand cleaning gel.
I used it at home to refit the airbox on my son's Lexmoto.   Best stuff I've ever used to fit rubber bits.

I use silicone spray but if you squeeze too hard you cant find it again

The hand gel evaporates off once the parts are assembled,  which is an advantage over silicon spray.

I use a good spray of carb cleaner. Best to get it right first-time as you can't budge them afterwards.

Red Rubber silicone grease, that is what it is for  ;)

And stays loose forever on handlebar grips, but would work well on a vacuum cleaner.

That would all have been so so useful a few years ago - - - as I stood at the side of the road in Moss Side, happily holding onto my 500/4 with one hand. Something didn't feel quite right but it was only when i was left holding a Baja grip with one hand  (remember those? - foamy things)... that I learnt that hand grips needed sticking on (and no one offered to help me pick her up!)

Hairspray was the thing in the eighties, but technology moves on!
