I toured a bit of Scotland a few years ago...the midges were horrendous until we camped on Skye when a stiff breeze kept the little blighters at bay - I haven't ever enjoyed a coastal breeze so much!

At last, I've had time to read through this thread.
The only 'old' engine I've ever had a up close and person relationship with is a Ailsa Craig 1hp (I think 🤔) that we had as an outboard motor on our tenders to get too and fro our boats when they were anchored off shore. It always reminded me of an electric whisk to look at, very small and compact but was ultra reliable, never left us stranded, thank goodness 🤣🤣🤣

For Laverda Dave and anyone else interested in Orkney or contemplating a trip, this is a short piece about the barriers on a local website:

Hello John,

here's a link to some photos from our Scotland tour last year.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/wEwzoqD49h1YrSQo7

Hope you get nice weather like we did.
Our only regret is that we didn't use our CB750F1 and took a BMW instead because we were certain it would piss down with rain.

Anyhow over 3 weeks and 3000 miles we seldom got rain, but I got forced into a Travel Lodge once to keep the peace!

Hope the photos inspire you and others to explore Scotland.

all the best

Gosh really. No pneumatic valve control needed in those days then per Messers Marquez et al. 😜

Well done that chugs along lovely!

Why only one valve operating? Assuming that is what it is / induction exhaust cycle etc??

The intake valve may be simple vacuum operation, needing no cam to apply it during the "suck" stroke .... matches the cadence of a slow rpm without complication of mechanical opening.

Hi Dave,
The Churchill Barriers (4 in total) were built during WW2 after a German Sub got through the blockship barrier to enter Scapa Flow and sank the Royal Oak with the loss of many hundreds of lives.  Churchill brought about the building of 4 barriers linking Islands to the south of the Orkney Mainland to prevent such a thing being repeated.  Much of the work was carried out by Italian POWs, who also built the World famous Italian Chapel.  Eventually roads were constructed on the barriers so you can now travel from Holm to Burwick which previously had to be done by boat.  I'm sure Johnny will chime in with more info - don't think he (or Churchill) helped build them though!

Ian

Thanks Ian. A bit more history to add to my WW11 memory bank in case I am asked about them during my guided tours of the Battle of Britain bunker (No 11 Group, Uxbridge).
