If you are doing all the cycle parts  it wont look good with a scruffy engine and the chances of chipped powder coat increase every time the engine is lumped in and out.

After powder coating you will need to remove small areas where the RH rear engine plate bolts on and at the coil mountings where the small green wire bolts on or you wont get good earths and electrics will play up.

If you look at the RH rear mounting where the battery earth cable goes you will see it is bare metal, and on inside up against engine case.

If you want a 100% reliable, clean engine get a complete gasket kit; a complets seal kit; cam chain; primary chain; 4 gudgeon pin circlips.

Everything else has to be inspected when apart but is usually OK/

HINT get the Honda manual and read carfully the bit about re-fitting the cam cover  VERY carefully or you will bend valves

They come up regularly on www.ebay.com ----the US site and i have found that most yanks will ship to UK if asked nicely first but do be advised that the US Post Office no longer do surface mail so everything goes airmail which can get a bit pricey on heavy stuff

Perhaps the tykes round here were different in the late 70,s Had one DT50 or MT50 (cant remember which) on which I ran out of space on the old handwritten failures putting 3 to a line!---ALL LEGIT I hasten to add, Worst was not only were the wheels at least 2" out of line but with the rear vertical, frame looking same, front was at a distinct angle; Front end was fitted totally wrong such that the speedo and brake cables went forwards before loopin back in an incredible arc that would catch double deckers and the only reason the rear brake worked was because the pedal dragged on the ground.

Yes there were "kids" that looked after their bikes but they were in the minority and you could tell within seconds of strting the test which category they were in.

Older people still had their "quirks". Had two tests, one before and one after dinner on identical bikes and when i went for dinner to the shop found them swapping front wheels as they only had one decent tyre between them-----Had to pass both as the test is on the vehicle "AS Pressented" and at the time of test!

Still made a note on the carbon just in case the bald tyre caused an accident on the way home!

The As Pressented one I still use today on my Mitsubishi L200 Diesel pickup as i disconnect the pressure pipe between turbo and fuel pump to cut the smoke---Tester knows i do it and can see it BUT cant actually do anything about it, not even an "Advisory", but he does keep copies of smoke tests for 3 months(not just mine i hasten to add) even though the ministry sez he dont have to.

I have always said that MOT testing needs a fair bit of latitude but the Ministry seems to be disagreeing and trying to tie the testers hands nowadays on all the "In the testers opinion" categories

Have you got that nylon ring between the pad and the piston?

Also put some production paper between the pads and disc (rough side to disc) and spin the wheel a few times with the paper draging to clean any secret additive (SH*T) from the disc appart from that "sorry sir they all do that, its a built in geriatric warning!"

According to the early 500 handbooks you can go right through the red bit!

Spent 2 years doing that in gears up to 3rd on one cos i was fed up with the reliability---know what damn thing still never went bang and when i pulled it to do the oil weep (Thats built in at the factory sir!) EVERYTHING was still well inside tolerance so i twin disced it with one caliper in front and one behind--looked odd but stopped well

If one side is working and the other not its not a relay problem its EITHER wrong bulb wattage OR bad earth contact.

You can fit any relay that is for 2 x 21 watt + 1 x 3 watt, go to halfords and get the cheapest car elactronic one you can and that should work, or any bike dealer that uses Hi-Level as a supplier

The K3 has pressed in pilot jets which need to be removed to clean properly. Using mole grips Grip tightly, without crushing, and pull and twist at the same time.

Refit with a light tap from a soft faced hammer

Thanks Matt, according to the parts book the inlet manifolds and manifold to carb rubbers on the K3 are 404 middle numbers which makes them unique to the K3, i suspect you are using K3 manifolds and rubbers, I only owned one K3 and that was sold to Ireland in a "chop" and didnt have an Airbox only pods and that i had to pull the pilots 3 times to get them clean!!

As to chairs I only drove one and that was a Cossack Urinal with the posh Dneper chair as against the "fit a machine gun" original, Unfortunately they were RH chairs putting the bike in the gutter making for "Interesting" handling and impoved muscles in the left arm-----swore that would be the only time and so far i kept to it
