CB500/550 / Valve spring washer removal
« on: March 17, 2019, 06:45:27 PM »
Can someone please advise how you remove the larger of the washers that sit under the valve springs.  The oil film is holding them in place and I cannot get any of them out.  Please help before I loose my mind.

Many thanks

CB650 / CB650 carbs
« on: March 10, 2019, 07:00:38 PM »
Hi, I have a 1980 CB650 engine that I intend to use for a future care racer project and have a question on the carbs.  I have a couple of sets of carbs (069A and PD46) which I hope I can use for the project.  My question is around the carb size.  All the specs I have found suggest a 1980 CB650 had PD51 carbs that were 26mm.  However, if you measure the internal diameter of the inlet stubs they are 30mm, which seems strange.  Could I use the PD46A’s or should I consider perhaps taking the opportunity to fit bigger carbs?

Thanks Trigger, bought it.  I am also negotiating with them for a pair of headlight mounts.

I suspect it is, as it was the choke mechanism I was dismantling at the time.  Where does it fit and what is it’s purpose.

CB500/550 / CB500K0 carbs (627B)

Spent today dismantling my 1971 CB500K0 carbs for cleaning and refurbishment.  All went reasonably well, despite having to cut two of the four float pins to get the floats out.  However, there is one item that fell on the floor as I was dismantling one of the carbs and I did not see were it came from.  I believe it is part no 96211-05000 which is  5/32” steel ball.  Can anyone advise what the purpose of this little ball is.

Many thanks

Tricks & Tips / Re: Love this thead

Magnets in oil systems are common place in aero engines, especially the piston engines of the 40s and 50s and the early gas turbines.  Their main purpose was early detection of imminent failures, but they also collected a lot of the fine crap that the filters could not catch, which has to be beneficial to any plain bearings in an engine. It is strange that people think that filters catch everything.  If they were designed to do that you would need a massive oil pump to overcome the pressure drop resulting from trying to push oil through such a fine filter.
Modern aero engines still have “chip detectors”, as they were known, but they are now linked to software that can interpret was is on the detector.  In some cases they are so sensitive they have to be switched of for the first few hours of running post build.

Tricks & Tips / Re: Internet myth or not

You can soak hard inlet rubbers in brake fluid and that will soften them.  Only problem is it takes a very long time.  You need to leave them soaking for several weeks, but it does work.

Thanks guys, that’s the dimension I was looking for.  The legs of the hinge I have made are too long as I suspected.

Many thanks

CB500/550 / CB500K0 hinge dimensions
« on: March 04, 2019, 12:54:17 PM »
I am rebuilding a 1971 CB500K0 and have not been able to get a hinge or catch / lock for the seat. Bizarly, I have bits of a catch, but not the main part that bolts to the frame.  I have made a hinge as a (hopefully) temporary measure, but I suspect the legs are too long, making the seat sit higher than it should.  Could anyone advise the height of the retaining pin holes above the seat base and if both legs are the same.
I do have a CB550 seat catch / lock, but don’t have the bolt on plate that you need to attach that to the frame.  I could end up having to improvise as the only CB500K0 catch I have found so far is in the US and would cost more in shipping than the cost to buy the catch.  I may modify the seat pan before I fit new foam / cover to allow me to fit either a CB550 sprung catch or the original CB500K0 hook type catch.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Rich, appreciate the offer.  There is a possibility one of the other forum members has a pair, but I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks

CB500/550 / Headlight mounts
« on: February 24, 2019, 03:37:10 PM »
Can anyone advise if headlight mounts from any other models fit CB500 / 550 forks. I have already tried a pair from a CB750K6 and they are too tall.  I have not been able to find a useable pair of CB500 ones that don’t cost a fortune or are are in such poor condition they would need chromed.

This is the response I received from HEL Performance who were very helpful.

HBF2077
Upper 300mm centres 20° banjo on both ends
Lower 575mm 20°  / 90° male into caliper (replacing metal hard line)

HBF2827
Upper 385mm centres, straight banjo to 20° banjo
Lower 350mm centres, straight banjo to female (connecting to metal hard line)

If neither spec is suitable or needs amending I can do so, or we could copy the hoses you have already.

Clearly you could combine the upper from HBF2077 with the lower of HBF2827 if you have UK bars and want to retain the metal hard line to the Cali per.
