Title: How to make a simple tool to remove stuck caliper pistons
Post by: Trigger on June 28, 2023, 09:11:14 PM
I have never had any problem in removing stuck piston in the brake caliper and have always got them out by turning the compressor up to 300 PSI but, today i was sorting out some calipers that have been in the bottom of a box for years. They would not budge with the air line so, i set too making a tool from old bits that were laying around.

1) you need is a old brake pipe.
2) a hacksaw
3) grease nipple
4) a tap
5) a old copper washer

Cut the old fitting off the pipe

Tap the fitting out to take a grease nipple.

I had to use a copper washer as, the angled nipple was not facing out.

Lock the bleed nipple off and attach a grease gun to the grease nipple and the piston was forced out.

Very simple tool  ;)

I just it a plug in the banjo bolt hole with a bolt of the same thread and used a cheap grease gun that I use on the digger rams. It fits the Honda bleed valve and just simply pumped it out. The nipple is sacrificial anyway. Worked a treat and didn’t have to construct anything
These ones wouldn’t blow out either, still came out with an audible pop

Same, even if the greasegun thread just goes one turn in the banjo hole the piston will pop out nicely!

I only have a manual grease gun that wastes more grease than it uses to lubricate.

Same principle but I used an old car master cylinder (old Mini) connected via pipe using the hydraulic pressure to push out any seized piston as my manual grease guns never worked.

Pretty sure an old  bike master cylinder would work as well.

Mine’s only a pump up manual one, it’s all in the wrist
Must be

There are many ways to pop a piston out. No risk of damaging the thread and it can go the the oven for 20 minutes to soften the seal and is easy to attach to a hot caliper.

And we all know how strong your wrists are, for some unknown reason of course.

Where's Phil when you need him?

After many hours of struggling over the years I bought one of these which gives me a massive smile. EVery time I use it. Have heard of injuries/ damage from the pressurise out method but thanks for the good explanation.

I did have one of those but fell victim to being leant out and never getting it back. Still listed on the whitebpard in the w.shop to be replaced. Great bit of kit aren't they?

Sorry to be a bit thick but how does that kit work?

You push the right sized insert into the piston and tighten it up so it spreads to grip the inside of the piston and then using the slide hammer bit that's at the top of the box in the picture, wind it into the insert and then you pull/bang it out. So simple it, as David says, makes you smile and generally as a rule, say under your breath........"thats such a good thing".

Really good bit of kit Matt, highly recommended, even the cheap shite ones are good and do the job with minimum fuss. I think there's a vid on Youtube on how it works but its really simple....

Just wattsapp'd you re tmrw, waitong to hear back from Tim at the min...Will confirm later bud. 8)

ER, that kit is OK if you can split the caliper but I assume it's no good for a twin piston type - unless I'm misunderstanding....

most have a cut out at the back so that you can pul the piston out or the caliper comes apart in half enabling them to be drawn out. Ive never had an issue or come accross a caliper that you cant get at yet, whilst using one but theres always a first time

How do you use the tool with 'plan a' (in the vid) if they are stuck? I'm being devil's advocate here as I have some old car ones that always caused me an issue...

The same way he has done it. The calliper bolts in half so you can get to one side that holds one set of two pistons and likewise the other. There has to be the room to pull em out or they wouldn’t ever go in…….surely?

Ah! I was unable to separate the halves as I could not get the seals at the time (the ones that seal the 2 halves together)...... ::)

Isn't the problem with the old SOHC pistons though that they are not hollow, they are fitted with a cap, so how can you use that kit then?

I didnt I greased it out. The 400 was hollow nut presumably after market then, i had no reason to think it wasnt at the time but it had ;aid up for 40 years......
