I think I have stripped the thread on the small bolt on the rear of the head (the one under the 1 in the picture)
Would it be OK do folks think to just put a longer bolt through with a nut? I realise this is not "original" but would it be OK for now
Right and proper is to Helicoil it of course but much bigger pain so cold do another time

Er what picture?

Ooops butterfingers - pic now uploaded !!

You COULD use a nut and bolt, but why not helicoil it, 5 mins work, and it saves removing the head a further time to get it done later
-
Problem is the underside is not flat so trying to tighten a nut will "cock" the bolt and stress it

Aha didn't think of that -- Helicoil it is then, at least I can do it without pulling the jugs I guess

I presume that particular bolt is only low torque? not like the other bolts surrounding the cylinders.... If so then you can easily get away with a longer bolt and nut... It would need much more torque to tilt and stress a bolt than the original threaded hole could handle anyway.
-
I'd go with Hairy on this - 5 mins and its a permanent job without any need to strip again
If you're short of helicoil kit, I'm only down the road and got one you can led Paul

Agree...why bodge it when its an easy fix for you at the moment to helicoil it. At least you know its done properly.
-
It could be argued a helicoil is a bodge all be it a good one, but a nut and bolt would be stronger than original so equally as good a bodge. ;D
-
You are forgetting the nut does not have a flat surface to bear on
-
It’s not going to matter, wont be tight enough to stress the bolt. I’m not arguing that its the best solution, just saying that it would work fine in required. A helicoil would possibly be a neater fix but they can be awkward to fit right.... Personally I prefer timeserts but I dont know if there is room to fit one, they tend to be bigger than helicoils..... the bolt would be an easy solution if not the neatest looking, thats all..
-
You just make a suitable washer to go under the nut, wether it be tapered or curved . It's common engineering practice when bolting odd shapes together.
-
Why not get a decent file and flat off the underside?
-
Thanks as always for all the thoughts that’s why I love this forum so much
Going to Helicoil it as head is coming off anyway
-
Helicoil is definitely the way to go. I helicoiled one of the rear crankcase bolts after drilling out the bit of the bolt that was left. Worked a treat.
