CB750 / #2 Exhaust fouling frame
« on: November 04, 2023, 10:54:26 AM »
Having an issue with #2 exhaust butting up against the frame in the side-stand area on the ‘750 K2. Everything OEM; and despite loosening all fasteners, and thence retightening with the pipe held clear… it simply resumed its ‘comfort zone’. Which is not mine!

Comments / tips please?

CB750 / ‘750 Start gremlin.

If not run for 2+ weeks, the K2 will fire up on the button (full choke), but then quickly die - no amount of nursing it on the throttle will work. It’s as though the ignition has failed - which I am 99.9% certain isn’t the case. Typically after 3 or 4 similar such cycles we’ll be successful and get on the road.

Everything about this K2 has been fully restored in the last year, but tbh it did this occasionally before the major overhaul. Once running, the bike runs faultlessly.

Engine totally stock, carb settings by the book, plugs look OK. Boyer Electronic IGN, DR8-ESL plugs. (with resistive caps as unable to source non-resistor plugs). Basically, the bike is as showroom new in every aspect.

Misc / Open / Split brake systems.
« on: July 21, 2023, 11:29:55 PM »
Bit naughty as non SOHC - forgive me.

Changed out a rear brake line (old Kombi) recently and upon bleeding the brake thought, “bloody hell, how come the pedal goes effortlessly to the floor during this process… as the system is (supposedly) split”

What am I missing pls? The Master cylinder has divided / isolated reservoirs, with each feeding a separate circuit via a common piston / cylinder mechanism - ie front & rear. It seems to me, should a line rupture occur anywhere, all braking will be lost.

Scratching my head …. and expecting to be embarrassed!

Misc / Open / Colour of Oil
« on: July 09, 2023, 08:41:02 AM »
Changing gear box oil today (car) and using last of year old bottle, followed by new bottle - both same manufacturer / type / spec. The new bottle however, almost clear in colour versus the older bottle @ amber. Notably both labellings identical, and state the colour as ‘Amber’
Both feel ‘slippery’ to the touch for sure.
Anything of concern here pls? Ta.

CB750 / 2 for the price of one - almost
« on: June 26, 2023, 12:50:02 PM »
After last year’s K2 renovation, I had a spare tank left over - a bit shabby - which I planned to sell. Lately though I’ve discovered a painter here in Brisbane (a Geordie gent as it happens), and Bob prepped and resprayed said tank + 2 new panels in Flake Sunrise Orange. A beautiful job; plan to swap colours at each major service.

We’ve had threads here discussing preserving tank / exhaust / valves etc and often adding some form of oil to the fuel is recommended….

Q - what if the car / bike has a catalytic converter - is a 100:1 eg 2T addition going to damage the CAT? And does ethanol have any adverse effects upon it. And if a CAT is damaged, will running be obviously affected?

Tricks & Tips / Honda Badge restoration.
« on: April 08, 2023, 01:50:56 AM »
My mum and dad always blamed me on lousy latex… hmm.

Anyways, just this week restored a couple of 750 Tank badges, and because I wanted to use particular UV resistant spray paints, decided to try liquid latex for blanking.

Initially, stripped the badges of old paint in the ultrasonic cleaner using hot water & a strong detergent. After a few passes they were down to bare metal.

Then sprayed them satin black, after which I brushed the liquid latex onto the HONDA surrounding area. It is like painting with cows milk, quite easy, but soon dries clear. Worst of all is brush clogging as it dries, though this is easily kept at bay by simply pulling the globule out as you go along.

Next sprayed them gloss white, and once dry 1200 grit sanded the high point / lettering outlines clear of all paint. After that 2000 grit and a bit of polishing paste (on the metal lettering borders)

Came out rather well, tho’ tbh a bit work intensive.

Misc / Open / Triumph forum recommendations pls.
« on: March 28, 2023, 11:20:42 PM »
Am taking delivery of a new Speed Twin this week, and simply asking recommendations for a friendly, knowledgeable forum such as Steve’s SOHC we have here.
There are indeed a few I can find, but simply trying to save myself the grief of picking a wrong ‘un.

Whilst here, general thoughts as to dealership maintenance vs home maintenance on a modern bike? I much prefer the latter being an innate and retired tinkerer, but accept certain tasks (eg balancing throttle bodies) beyond my current toolings.

Misc / Open / DOT4 to DOT 5 Silicon
« on: January 19, 2023, 04:03:21 AM »
I’ve my old Kombi on axle stands, replacing the rear drum slave cylinders with new ones; and all brake lines drained down.

Q. What would be required to switch over to DOT 5 Silicon - eg is there a simple flushing product I can use - eg DOT 5 (S) itself? (I have no plans to change out the existing Master Cylinder, or indeed the front disc / caliper seals.)

Ta muchly in anticipation…

Misc / Open / Cables / sheath lube
« on: January 09, 2023, 12:13:39 PM »
My daily drive is a split-screen Kombi: dear god, if ever drive-by-wire was needed this is it. The accelerator cable (& clutch) is a 4m long affair, wending it’s way down an aged 6mm ID steel tube, then through a bendy pipe to the jiggling engine. Typical life is 2 years, ie when the 1.5mm stainless cable begins to fray. It’s such an awful dirty job changing it that it gets done habitually versus risking a roadside failure…

So, I want to replace the worn steel / bendy tubes with a continuous nylon one, with no joins, ie accel pedal to carb arm. And here’s the question… should I be lubing the ss cable in any way? And if so, what oil / grease please?

Desperately hoping it can all be kept clean / dry!

Misc / Open / CBX500X / NC750X
« on: November 29, 2022, 10:15:16 PM »
I’ve a good friend (>60), recently retired and now looking to buy a new road bike. (him & I spent 25+ yrs in Asia and have been well away from western offerings!)

So, any experiences of the CBX500X and NC750X please. The buyer is an experienced rider, though with more off-road time than ‘cruising’. He’s doing the rounds of all that’s on offer, and has recently highlighted these 2 machines.

Failing this, any glowing recommendations of any practical road bike, 500cc +. Looking to buy new / modern and not 1970s SOHC type 🙁. (his loss eh?)

CB750 / CB750K Sidestand mod?
« on: November 25, 2022, 11:50:11 AM »
Appreciating it would be non-standard, but almost having set off with the sidestand down today (in a vague rush) am asking whether there is a ‘stand with rubber safety peg (like my 400F2 had) that is compatible with the CB750K2?
I have been to great pains to keep the bike factory, but hey….

CB750 / Chain Oiler (CB750K)
« on: November 20, 2022, 12:05:19 PM »
Seems to me that the (earlier) CB750K Chain Oiler was not a popular thing, ie most folk have them disabled. Just asking why, as in my recent rebuild I’ve recommissioned mine, and tbh quite impressed by it. It’s been a while finding it’s ‘sweet spot’ (ie 1/4 turn out < each outing) - but I think I’m there now, with the rollers damp but not soaked. Perhaps it’s simply working nicely due my fairly conservative treatment of the old girl, but nevertheless keen to hear all comments.

CB750 / CB750K Master Cylinder Bore
« on: October 04, 2022, 07:56:46 AM »
Can anybody verify the standard piston diameter here please… my manuals suggest 14mm, but within the reservoir suggests 12mm. Furthermore, prior to any knowledge on this topic I simply ordered a Yamiya service kit and fitted it… without any dramas. Sadly I’ve binned the old piston and so can’t easily measure / verify the bore now.

I ask because the front brake has a woody feel to it; at abouts 20 mm (lever ) ball travel it’s biting, and within a very short further pull I’m at max effort.

I’m pretty sure the reservoir is original, and as stated, has just had new internals. The lines are OEM, ie NOT the braided type. I’m using sintered pads and the stopping performance is fine. To clarify, I’d just like a bit more travel / feel within the system.

Tricks & Tips / Spare spark plug
« on: September 18, 2022, 12:22:56 PM »
If you fancy carrying a spare ‘plug, heat shrinking it will keep it dry (squeeze the ends whilst it hot) and offer a degree of protection in the tool kit.
Not that you’ll ever be able to break it free of course 😂…
