Other Bikes / Re: CJ250T

My recollections from running a CB360 G5 as a student in the 70's is that most of the cycle parts and electricsare interchangeable between G5, CJ and 400/4s.

The CJs were down spec'd slightly from the G5: less chrome, five speed gearbox rather than six, and no electric start.

The footrests were moved back to improve riding position, so rear brake and gear levers are different as well.

That made them a little lighter though [And a little faster if the owners were to be believed!]. ::)

The engines are interchangeable as a lump between the 250 and 360, but the the 360 is stroked as well as overbored so the crank is different.  The con rod little end dia is also bigger on the 360 and the head has a squish ring machined into it to suit the bigger bore.  The 360 has a bigger size of carbs too.

I was told the pistons from a CB350 K4 could be made to fit the 250 G5 with an overbore to 325cc, but never tried that for myself.

CB500/550 / Re: Twin Disks
« on: January 08, 2012, 04:45:32 PM »
Thanks for the further comments Guys.

Brick ties are indeed a good source of stainless wire and pierced flat.

As you point out, lever pressure and lever travel are functions of the ratio of the master cylinder and caliper piston bores, plus the geometry of the lever and its pivot.

That's why I was interested to hear from those who've already done the conversion: no point in re-inventing the wheel [Nor the disks bolted to it!], especially as it's easier to use existing parts rather than designing something from scratch.

 :)

Thanks for the answers Guys:  looks like a little project coming on.......

The link is particularly clear about what is entailed.

I used to think the Honda hydraulic disk was OK provided it wasn't too cold and wet, but I've kind of got used to twin Brembo Goldlines these days!

CB500/550 / Twin Disks

A few questions about going for double disk brakes on the front wheel:

1.  Does an early Goldwing speedo drive just bolt to the hub when the second disk is in place?

2.  Do you know of anyone who can drill holes in disks?

3.  Can you use the same m/c or does the lever travel get huge?

4.  Where do you get longer sholdered bolts to hold both disks to the hub?

Oh, and is it worth the time, cost and effort?

Has anyone on here recently had their tank and side panels resprayed. If so who did you use and what did you pay? :-[ Most importantly what was the finished result like. I am in Hampshire and would obviously prefer someone local but expect that this will not be the case! ;)

Hi!  I've had some very good paint work done by Sandydown Bodyworks.  http://www.sandydown.com/index.htm

They tend to do classic car restoration and insurance jobs, but are interested in bikes too, so depends what quality and look you are after!

Yes it was hard to find.
CB350 125cc of Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)
CB400/500/550 160cc of SAE 10W- 30 oil

Page 178 in my Clymer manual.

Hope this helps.  :)
Is that 160cc in each leg, or 80cc in each =160cc total?

CB500/550 / Rickman 3/4 Fairing
« on: September 26, 2011, 05:24:59 PM »
Hi: I see some members of the forum have the Hondastyle/Rickman 3/4 fairings, so I'm hoping for some helpfull advice and/or photo's of the mountings.

I have one which has a "home done" and very weathered Honda Brittain red and blue colour scheme on it, so it's almost certainly been fitted to a Honda!

I'm thinking of fitting it to a CB550F2, but having offered it up, it seems a bit wide at the bottom compared with the width of the engine.

It does have the circular cut-outs that line up with the alternator and points covers though.

Does anyone know if they are model specific: I suppose this could be off a CB750????

Thanks....Mark

Thanks for the welcomes UK Pete & Steve D.

'Stockbridge is the pretty bit where you have to slow down on a blast along the old A30 (what a road!)': that's the place.

The A30 sure beats the A303.

Hi K2-K6

'Hello and welcome to the forum, got any bikes?': just the ones listed in the footer at the moment, so only two on theroad [But I'm always on the lookout for another bargain!]

'Stockbridge, is that where you can watch the brown trout going under the high street?': more rainbow than brown outside Orvis atm but it surprises the visitors when they throw bread to the ducks and the trout leap for it!
