Other Bikes / Out of balance brake drum?
« on: March 08, 2016, 09:49:12 PM »
Hi, I've got a CB250RS, SOHC single, and a pulsing feeling in the back wheel under braking. I'm pretty certain that's an oval drum. To rectify this do I need to strip the rim, tyre and spokes from the hub, and then get the ovality in the drum turned true, or keep the rim and drum under tension with the spokes as the drum is trued? What's the preferred method? And would a specialist wheel builder be able to do this, or is the drum a scrapper and I need a new hub, it's a shame as the wheels were rebuilt by the previous owner with stainless spokes and new rims!
Thanks
Nigel.

CB350/400 / CB350/4 Countershaft bearing.
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:48:23 PM »
Just Curious, is the countershaft bearing replaceable on a 350/4.?  There's nothing wrong with my bearing, and I'm going to reuse it.
but I can't see how the bearing locating ring can be removed? Has anyone done it?
Is the oil seal surface ring an interference fit on the countershaft? If that's removed it then looks like the bearing and then the gear could be taken off the shaft?
How would you do it? , bearing in mind that a NOS shaft, gear, and bearing assembly is on sale for €229.00! And only four left!

CB500/550 / CB500/4 Countershaft Bearing dimensions.
« on: December 08, 2015, 12:02:08 AM »
Hi guys, I've stripped down my gearbox and found two different size bearings, though the parts manual says they are both 5205 bearings which have a 52mm Dia.  One of them is a 5205HS   ( HS for high speed ) I know from previous posts that there was a misprint in the 500/550 manuals. I have sourced the 5205 52mm bearing, p# 91002-286-008; there seems plenty of those about,  but the countershaft bearing #91002-283-003. (57 mm dia with snap ring groove) seems unobtainable. I've tried googling the bearing, and no-one seems to have them anymore. The bearing I have is a NACHI 258651 25mm inner dia, 57mm outer dia, and 24mm wide. The snap ring groove is central, 2mm wide and 1.15 mm deep. The experts may correct me, or confirm these measurements! Fortunately, mine is in good condition. I have seen countershafts for sale with this bearing fitted, but none available singly.
I've found out that 5205 as you would expect means 52 mm outer dia, and the 05 means 25 mm ID,
so I tried googling 5705, no luck. :(

Honda must have had thousands of these bearings made, possibly even millions! So where have they all gone?
Any ideas?
Also, can anyone explain what B/brg N/rad N/com on CMSNL website mean? I'm guessing ball bearing, nominal radius, but I'm stumped on N/com!
Regards
Nigel.

CB350/400 / 350/4 front fork bottom cover removal.
« on: October 08, 2015, 09:42:37 PM »
Hello, I've spent a whole evening looking at all the posts in the 350/400 section for an answer, to no avail. I need to replace the fork oil seals on my 350/4, but can't see how to remove the chromed lower cover from the lower fork leg.
I can see two small spigots and a slot, and some holes. The picture below shows that the cover isn't threaded, so how do I remove the cover, I have heard it's like an eighth turn bayonet fitting, or is it a screwdriver twisted in the slot, or drifted out, and the final option, a C spanner in the hole?
Thanks
Nigel

New Member Introductions / Hello from a lurker...
« on: October 05, 2015, 12:47:18 AM »
Hi I'm restoring a 72 CB500/4 and a 72 CB350/4, a 76 CL450 twin, as well as a CB360 twin, so my leisure time is mapped out for this winter.
I'm from Weymouth in Dorset, I am a Scuba Diving Charter boat skipper, I'm not married and have no children, so I have no competition for my time.
I've completed the cycle parts on all the bikes, and now have to do the engines, that's the fun part for me. I've fitted LED bulbs in the indicators, and tail lamps, as well as the clocks, with the exception of the turn repeater which I left as an incandescent bulb. The headlamps are traditional incandescents for now.
I've bust a cylinder stud on the 500, and a PO has snapped off a bolt in the 350's sump. Apart from that, so far there are no problems that haven't been overcome. The Carbs were full of something organic, and it wasn't dinosaur bones.. ....I've fitted new tyres, new exhausts, 8 silencers and down pipes..that hurt my wallet! New seats, wiring harnesses, and loads of parts.... Still have to paint the tanks and side panels.
I'm glad to be a part of this forum.
Nigel.
