CB350/400 / CB400F2 Tank Decal positioning
« on: April 04, 2013, 10:01:57 AM »
Hi all,
Can anyone advise me whether the positioning of the 'HONDA' decal is the same for both the F/F1 & F2 models?
Cheers,
Lobo

CB350/400 / CB400F Carb overhaul
« on: February 13, 2013, 08:35:34 AM »
Gents,

About to tear down the carbs & overhaul. Before I start I note a couple of small plastic 'tie rods' tying the 1/2 & 3/4 lifters together. They're both cracked / broken.

What is their job? - the bike seemed to run fine, and any tips for re fabricating them - will light aluminium sheet do or will that be too stiff?

Ta muchly,....

CB350/400 / 400F Engine Gasket Set
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:39:53 AM »
Morn all,

Asking whether the complete AFTERMARKET DSS Gasket set at £39+VAT is a good buy, or would I be wasting my money?

The OEM bits would come in at significantly over £100, plus I'd be left with sourcing the odd hard-to-find bits to complete the full set.

Tricks & Tips / Cb750 K2 / HM341 baffles
« on: January 24, 2013, 05:29:24 PM »
.... won't be playing with the bike for a couple of months and simply wanted to squirt WD40 down the 'pipes for laying up. Removed the single 10mm bolt from each pipe... but the baffles showing no signs of wanting to let go. Any tips / tricks? What's the best 'bit' to pull on?!
Thanks...

CB750 / K2 Handlebars - E (nglish) spec?
« on: January 21, 2013, 09:27:53 PM »
....I ask because the brake master cylinder rubber boot pushes moderately hard up against the tachometer. (I've ensured the enclosed 'oil bolt' has clearance)

The handle bars appear OEM, with the loom cut-outs, punch markings (to line up) etc. I've installed them iaw the punch marks.... and am left with this squashed protective boot.

Can't believe Honda would have planned this - help / comments?

CB350/400 / 750K2 / 400F Caliper pistons interchangeable?
« on: January 08, 2013, 02:28:20 PM »
I've a badly pitted 400F caliper piston, and a serviceable '750K2 piston.  They're dimensionally the same (externally).... but the '400 piston has a blanking plate in its end....versus the open ended 750 part. The 'blanking' plate rattles, though is captured in some way that I haven't yet fathomed.  That said, I don't think I can transfer it across due the 400 piston appears to have a thinner wall where this plate fits.
Any comments on whether I can use the K2 piston... and if I have to somehow mimic this blanking plate.
Cheers...

Misc / Open / Engine Professional Restoration / Rebuild
« on: January 01, 2013, 05:16:07 PM »
Wanting any feedback - good or bad - on Stotfold Engineers (Biggleswade) who, on paper, look v.good for a strip down, restoring & rebuild of my tired, but running, 50K 400F engine. I don't have the time (sadly), nor tooling for the work, but am looking for a one-stop service to 'zero time' the engine, including media blast & paint of block etc - top quality work only accepted.
Anyone with A1 recomendations pls note my address as Badingstoke area.
Cheers.

CB750 / CB750 Caliper rattle
« on: December 21, 2012, 06:10:52 AM »
New back to biking after 30yrs - and can't find any tolerances / specs on this.  Basically my 1971 K2's caliper moves up & down by upto 1/8" due slop in the carrier. This pin (I guess) is OK as a snug fit into the upper / lower caliper holder mounts (& shows no waisting) - so the play is within the holder itself. This translates into a fairly mechanical 'clunk-clunk' noise when transversing bumps etc  at low speed. It, of course, goes away if any drag on the brake.
I pointed this out at the recent MOT - no concerns at all. So, is it normal, and if not any suggestions eg bushings - or am I up for a new holder? I read in the various maintenance manuals about calipers seizing on with lack of use - can't ever imagine mine seizing with this amount of free play!
Cheers.

New Member Introductions / Poor etiquette on my behalf & hi
« on: December 17, 2012, 02:15:12 AM »
Sorry folks, in my haste last month to sort problems overlooked the basics.... So, Hi!

Before I start you'll perhaps know I've already been using the 'site, and I've just got to say how blown away I am with everyone's generosity in both time & imparting knowledge - a belated thanks.

So, back into bikes after a 30 year abstinence, and last April bought a semi-restored 1971 '750K2 - which is a work in progress, but coming along nicely. The frame, engine & tank were all professionally restored, the rest... hmm; it was though the owner either run out of taste, cash, or both. Anyways, on track to be a very nice Candy Ruby / original looking example.

Then in Nov I bought a 77 '400F; this one in less good condition & needing more attention. Potentially a little beauty, and will again, try to bring her up to, as near as damn it, factory fresh.

Nice to meet you all,
Lobo.

CB750 / Carb Balancing - on the bench?
« on: December 16, 2012, 12:28:39 AM »
Hi all,
Lateral thinking or won't work?  Have just torn down / rebuilt the carbs of my K2. Last night had a brainwave (??!) and balanced them on the bench via the Hoover (don't tell the missus). With a steady vacuum got nice / repeatable stable readings across the bank, though of course not in the 16-24 cm Hg range (which I guess is simply that around 900rpm idle). Point is, the carbs are 'balanced' spot on.
Or are they?  In this exercise are you (a) trying to match the throttle openings precisely (which I have) or..(b) are you trying to match the vacuums taking into account each cylinder performance. eg - one worn cylinder would throw its carb slide out of matched position when balancing the vacuum.
Cheers, Lobo.

Where's My Old Bike? / GVH55S CB400F2 -Parakeet Y.
« on: December 12, 2012, 02:34:25 PM »
Think it stiil around according to DVLA. I bought it April '78, and (stupidly) sold it 2yrs later to fund... crap.
Someone out there taking good care of her? I hope so. PM me pls, no specifics necessary in case I come 'round & 'repatriate' her to the rightful owner!....
Cheers, Lobo.

CB350/400 / Tank / Panels paint recommendation sought
« on: December 05, 2012, 03:59:20 PM »
Hi all,

Would like to revert my '77 F2 to the Parakeet Yellow of that year, can anyone recommend a good paint shop who'll do a great job - inc decals & lacquer coat? Been quoted at one place £350 + VAT inc the Sidepanels. (Hampshire / Reading area)

Alternative is to sell my tank / panels & buy the DSS parts, all complete @ £450+ VAT.  Anyone any experience of this replica tank quality / paint finish ... and comment whether it'd severely affect the value etc of my machine.

Cheers,
Lobo

CB350/400 / OEM Tank / Sidepanels - how do I verify?
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:47:56 PM »
Hi all,

The side panels on my 'new' 400F are obviously repros, but the tank... unsure. Can anyone tell me how to positively confirm these parts as OEM or otherwise?

You've guessed it, new to the CB400F....

Cheers,
Lobo
