Tricks & Tips / Fuel tank hinge pin
« on: September 15, 2022, 11:44:15 AM »
Put in a new hinge pin yesterday (#14) with minimum fuss by using an automatic centre punch (into the conical hole of the hinge pin) and smallest socket I could find (3mm) as a dolly / on the head.

Towels, of course under the work, and gradually worked up the punch pressure as started out somewhat apprehensive.

But, no issues, job done single handed, quickly and neatly.

Member 4 Sales / RD400 Tool kit?
« on: September 08, 2022, 01:18:59 PM »
Not quite for sale (yet?) as fundamentally I don’t know what this kit is - though I suspect RD400.

Can anyone advise please, along with info what might be missing / needed to make it complete. The kit is unused, bagged, boxed and NOS I guess. If known I’d appreciate a guess at its worth?

Misc / Open / Quality Control / Honda 1970s
« on: August 22, 2022, 10:49:37 PM »
As I approach first start-up of my 750K2 since total rebuild, I’ve been wondering whether Honda started every ‘750 unit and ran it through the gears etc before shipping? If indeed each engine was started, to what extent was its shakedown? And if they were shipped ‘cold ‘, what % of units had issues - inc the whole bike, eg forks / front brake (leaking?), electrical issues etc? Intrigued.

Project Board / Help with build date pls?
« on: August 09, 2022, 03:27:52 AM »
Would like to order a data plate for my 750 K2, first registered in the UK, June 1973. The Chassis # is CB7502077106. I appreciate the UK models may not have had a data plate, but the bike is now in Australia where I believe they do.

Can any either tell me, or advise me how to ascertain the date of manufacture?

Cheers,
Simon

« on: July 15, 2022, 01:24:26 AM »
Bit of a long shot, but looking for the double holed Axle wrench, found in CB450, CB500 & CB750 toolkits circa 1970. (and indeed seeking the original C spanner / point file!)/

Conditions unimportant; can supply a Hampshire postal address.

Misc / Open / Silicon Brake Fluid & Cap Markings
« on: April 25, 2022, 11:10:30 PM »
One for Piki I guess… I’ve been PM’ing him but can’t add photos as requested.

In the major recon of my 750 K2 I’m changing over to Silicon DOT 5, and would like to replace the Resevoir Cap markings with a look-alike sticker (same sizing / metallic border / Font / spacings etc) reflecting this.

The words would read, “USE BRAKE FLUID SILICON DOT 5”

Any thoughts / help much appreciated; Piki I’m in Australia so if this is a problem for you please don’t waste you efforts. (though of course I’ll happily pay all costs)

(I’m away from home right now, and can’t supply correct diameter of border)

Cheers,
Simon

Tricks & Tips / Oil Pipes Dressing
« on: March 26, 2022, 11:35:11 AM »
Recently I renewed my A & B Oil pipes with a couple of high quality SS Crimped pieces from Germany. And very nice they are… but not with the black braided OEM look.

In our local Jaycar they have a black heat-shrink weave wrap which looks the part, and today I gave it a try with great results. The two ends I overcut by a couple of mils, tucked it under the crimp skirt with a blunt screwdriver, and applied more heat. Very pleased.

Will be a while before they stand the test of time, but the weave is robust (0.7mm thick) and will surely be aided by the heat of the pipes. I’ve done the same trick on a Kombi breather hose 1+ year ago - it still looks fine.

Announcements / Beautiful…
« on: February 12, 2022, 01:41:38 AM »
Have recently bought a Sandcast ‘750; a policy my dad left me matured, and it was a no-brainer whether to squander it on bills and crap, or use it as a nice reminder of him. Anyways, found this restored ‘750, engine and frame numbers late 4000s / early 5000s. Having initially planned to ride it, that plan has changed as I’ve the K2, besides which keeping the two mint will be a bridge too far. (of course this might change)

And on a further win, Mrs Lobo has relented and allowed me to keep it in our downstairs sitting room - so a huge result there.

…. I take a cuppa down and just gaze at it - so very sad 😂

CB750 / 750 K2 Strip & Rebuild - help please
« on: January 27, 2022, 12:04:53 PM »
Hi all, the big difference to this rebuild thread is that I’ll only write when begging for help as I simply can’t otherwise compete - given the skills of most on here.
So, today broke my  ‘750 K2 down into component parts, for no other reason than I want to, ie pretty the old girl up to how the showroom would have had her in 1973. The engine’s running fine; but I will go through it … tho’ not anticipating any major issues. Menno has kindly painted a body set for me, and all other bits will be plated / finished iaw OEM … as far as possible.
Today’s questions please:
(1) Not mentioned in my manual, but I understand the ‘Connecting Rod’ (ie big end) bolt (& nut I guess) are the yield type .. ie one time use only. Are there ANY OTHER such fasteners in the engine that I should be ordering rather than reusing? I’ll assume the old ones are good for torquing down wrt Plastigauge checks?
(2) I failed to remove the Advance spindle from the RHS of the crankshaft - I bottled out after applying as much force as I was comfortable with. (I was working on the assumption of RH Thread and counter clockwise rotation iaw the American forum btw). So… tips please on ultimately removing this with no tears.
Ta for now.

Tricks & Tips / Consensus on home plating.
« on: January 24, 2022, 12:59:04 PM »
I’m currently dismantling the 750 K2 as she’s long due a major refresh. Tonight I dismantled the carbs (& main plate) into their component bits, and sighed at the thought of (a) finding a good / reliable / cheap plater, and (b) endless bloody trips to & fro as the project progresses and (c) the inevitable loss of screws, and worse, non-replaceable parts in that process.
So…. have been looking at home plating kits (zinc initially)… not cheap on the face of it, but maybe so with endless wee parts. Saw UK Pete’s great write up on the Sandcast Only Forum - he had nothing but praise for home plating.
Consensus please - can I expect reliable and professional results, or can it all be a bit hit and miss? One factor I have to consider is that we’re ‘off grid’ as it were with Rainwater tank only, and septic tank - ie no formal drainage / town sewage system. We’re on seawater front… all ground water flows directly into the sea - bottom line I can’t easily dispose of the fluids on the property. Thoughts?

Misc / Open / Jay Leno’s got a brother in Oz?
« on: November 30, 2021, 04:40:43 AM »
So, today treated the missus to lunch at a local cafe, which just happens to have a Classic showroom attached. Bloody amazing place…. ya just go in & browse the vehicles - all alone. No charge, just the occasional, pls respect the stuff and don’t touch kinda signs.
The K1 has 0 kms on the clock, which I’m guessing is genuine looking at it. It’ll be a great reference source for tidying up my K2.

Many cars too…. a few from the 80’s which were kinda ‘meh’ versus the cool monster below…

CB750 / What would you do…..?
« on: November 29, 2021, 12:03:32 PM »
I really appreciate my 1973 K2, ride / use it a fair bit, and am definitely not overly precious about it….

As an early NY project I’m planning to treat it to a facelift, and have the body set repainted (in touch with Menno right now), the engine out / fettle an occasional jumping 4th gear, engine repainted, cases polished, carbs vapour blasted etc. Most of the work, as a recent retiree (yay) I plan to try myself, whilst learning a bit along the way.

All good, until mentioning this to a K1 mate today. In the past he’s noticed my motor is actually a K3 lump, and highly recommend I seek out a replacement case with an Eng # plausibility in line with the K2 frame #.

Now I’ve been visiting the Sandcast forums lately, and from here too, realise that these folk and the K1 types (!) can be a bit ‘sniffy’ about what they’ve got (😂) - which is understandable given the changes the ‘750 was going through in 69/70. But by the time the K2’s + came along, I’d have thought the bike was considered in serious mass production, and ‘matching’ numbers less of an issue - particularly wrt resale value etc.

So… my question is… should I bother with this advice? Honestly my engine is a good ‘un, pulls strongly, has never missed a beat … or burned a drop of oil. I don’t plan a massive outlay of $$$s on this recon (since doing much of it myself), but swapping the Eng #, I could see, might be a pain & a path I wish I hadn’t bothered with.

Thoughts?

CB750 / Yamiya tanks query
« on: November 20, 2021, 12:25:31 AM »
The K2 looking a wee bit tired…

Comments pls on the Yamiya statement wrt their K2 tanks …. “It is inspected but make sure to coat inside the tank to prevent leaking or rusting. There are some rust spots due to the hydraulic test.”

Are folk really coating the insides of their new Yamiya tanks?

Thoughts too appreciated on whether to get the existing tank / panels resprayed (all in vgc) versus purchasing this new set from Japan (and then selling the old tank / panels).

(I’m in Oz, so if any other Oz readers can recommend a QUALITY tank painter then let me know pls.)

Ta.
