CB750 / Front Axle query
« on: September 27, 2020, 06:45:18 AM »
Hi,
Reassembling the front end of the K2 with a couple of questions.

(1) never particularly noticed in the past, but the axle is about 3mm short of flush with the axle holder. The axle is in the correct orientation (ie hex side by the disc) and looks normal wrt the various clearances. Notably though the 400F’s axle is flush in this respect. Comments? (the forks were removed off the bike)

(2) the fork seals have been replaced; and I note the ‘book says 225ml of oil to replace for the K2..... and other volumes for K3 blah blah. Q. The bike is nearly 50yo.... how can I tell what forks are on it... they may have been changed out in the past?

CB750 / Petcock leaking
« on: September 27, 2020, 06:37:17 AM »
Have had the tank off the K2 the last few nights, only to find the petcock leaks (ie into the carbs)... lord knows how long it’s been doing this ...I don’t need PMJ47’s seized engine dramas! (how’s that going btw?)

What appears to be the problem is a hardened selector seal - anyone know where I can source a replacement? Ta...

Tricks & Tips / CB750K Speedo Recon... help pls
« on: September 27, 2020, 06:30:17 AM »
Hi,
Guess one for Peter / Kent400, but happy for anyone to chime in.

Am reconditioning my 750K2 Insts, as a recent eBay kph speedo came with a mismatching face to the RPM gauge.

Anyhoos, whilst I’ve now done a few gauges, I’ve never yet tackled the damping; in this case there is none (!) and so I guess the time has come.

The inst is fully dismantled tho’ fallen short (for now?) of grinding away the ‘once only’ tabs which (1) capture the top plate and (2) the total kms tumbler.

Cheers in advance,
Simon

Tricks & Tips / Fork Seals - 750
« on: September 16, 2020, 11:49:25 PM »
Forgive me... did indeed do a quick search but didn’t immediately find what I’m after.

Q - can we confirm that the (new) double lipped fork seals are inserted ‘closed side up’? (I ask coz interestingly the old ones were open side up (ie the spring exposed) which might just explain why they’ve weeped ever since owning the bike... 🙁)

Misc / Open / Tyre technicals...
« on: September 15, 2020, 12:01:51 PM »
Today had Michelin Road 5s fitted to my Guzzi. They are correctly orientated.

Intrigued, cause logic suggests to my wee brain that on a soaked road, the tread will gather water, and with further rotation trample / channel / squeeze it towards the centre of the thread... lifting / aquaplaning the tyre.

What am I missing here?

Tricks & Tips / Broke spoke...
« on: August 30, 2020, 12:09:29 PM »
An interesting one. Was changing the rear bearings today (K2) and took the opportunity of deep cleaning the various bits including the hub. Blow me, a spoke was broken - VERY hard to spot; I’m honestly wondering how long it’s been like this. I went to get a spare... came back to the wheel... and spent another 2 mins searching again for it!

Q - is this a common occurrence, and (2) Bryan / Trig - is this an MOT check item and  would you likely spot it in a test?

I’m gonna have to start a personal wheel tappers club for the 5 bikes 🙁.

CB750 / Torque Settings - CB750K
« on: August 29, 2020, 09:32:46 AM »
Hi all,

Working from a rather old CB750 shop manual, which frustrating is devoid of (any) torque values.

Does anyone out there have a nice every nut’n’bolt’ table of CB750K torque settings; specifically tonight, I’m after the swing arm pivot nut setting. Next up is changing the rear wheel bearings - so any known values there appreciated too. (eg sprocket fastenings). And next the front forks & wheel bearings.... pinch bolts, disc nuts... the whole shebang.

My elbow is indeed fine for the generic stuff, but hey, if there’s a correct value I’d appreciate it.

Ta muchly.

Tricks & Tips / Speedo Drive Unit.
« on: August 27, 2020, 10:04:00 AM »
..forgive me, my search failed - though I seem to remember Trig once commenting that the CB750 Speedo drive was unique in having only one part number.

Anyhoo... I want to service it. I’ve got the main central clip / worm wheel out, but now want to get the worm drive out. I’ve cautiously drilled out the brass grub screw (?) at the closed end of the worm drive, and can now see a spindle. I was expecting the end cap to free... but nope (noting that only minimal effort applied). At this point I’ve decided to pause...

So; help please.

CB350/400 / Stanley Light bulb..
« on: August 11, 2020, 01:52:59 AM »
Morn all,

The low beam has given up the ghost, and so I’m on the prowl for a replacement Stanley bulb... 45/50W or so from memory.

I’ve just been on eBay... but no luck, my particular bulb terminals are 3 spades... making 3 sides of a square so-to-speak. The bulb itself has a large circular flange - about 35mm dia I guess - over which a large plastic clamp screws down to capture it into the bowl.

Sorry, no pic, so you got the 1000 words. Anyways... any clue where to find one?

Simon

Tricks & Tips / My new helping hand...
« on: July 22, 2020, 01:06:45 PM »
For too long have struggled with trying to innovate when trying to remove rear wheels / front forks etc. Last weekend thought, “enough!”, whipped down to Bunnings and bought an electric hoist (250Kg).
It’s now installed in the garage ceiling (against a triple joist) and suddenly my life has become a whole lot easier.
Bliss...

CB750 / RPM hang at idle throttle.
« on: June 20, 2020, 02:13:43 PM »
Engine tuning is a black art to me...

So, my neighbours K1; which I set the valves, timing strobe @ 4000 rpm / full advance marks), one spark plug gap ( was ok / others too tight for me to free) and carb vacuum-balancing checked (no adjustments necessary)....
My ears are not up to individual air-screw adjustments - and so the 4 carbs set at 1 turn out, ie the book figure. (Note - they were 2 turns out)

The bike is tired & unloved, but overall appears to be totally original and unmolested.

Queries.
 (1) by winding out the air screws the revs increased... no ‘ peak’ was achieved at the 3 turns out point, the revs just kept (slightly) increasing. I gave up here and simply returned the ‘screws back to 1 turn out.
(2) the bike starts easily on the kick-start (duff batt) and needs only a minute before the choke can be fully backed off (OAT about 20 degs) My K2 needs significantly longer..
(3) a slight hesitation on pulling away, but once rolling throttle response is good through all rpms & gears. She pulls smoothly and with no hesitations.
(4) on closing the throttle, the RPM will hang at 3000rpm for 3-4 seconds before dropping back to idle - even if rolling the throttle against the back-stop (2 cable type)

So... my guess is the idle circuit set-up.... help please?

Simon

What is it? / What is it?
« on: June 17, 2020, 02:33:41 PM »
I don’t know the answer... nor does the owner of this 750K1. (He’s distracted by all his other toys... puts the street to shame with the fun stuff he has)

Anyhoo.

It looks like an indicator relay, and has been mounted under the tank / just aft of the coils. The leads disappear off into the headlamp shell.
Coincidentally there is a majorly big red lamp mounted between the Speedo / Rev counter. Related? Dunno.

With time I will indeed work out what this all is... but any suggestions in the interim?

Ta,
Simon

PS (1) It is not a replacement indicator relay. (2) have never seen the red lamp illuminated - ie not high beam nor anything repeater.

Tricks & Tips / Swing arm / solidified grease?
« on: June 17, 2020, 02:27:29 PM »
After more tips folks...

Again... the neighbour’s 750 K1, and noting I can’t pump grease into the LHS swing arm nipple. (can RHS). I assume it’s grease is solidified, the bike is rather tired and unused. The good news is that there is no discernible play in the ‘arm, which leads me to think that simply freshening up the grease might save the day.

So... I’m being lazy and not even removed / attempted anything yet, but any tips to achieve what I want without removing the whole swing arm?

Cheers,
Simon.

Tricks & Tips / CB750K K1 Petcock Filter removal
« on: June 16, 2020, 10:51:51 PM »
I’m servicing my neighbours K1; the first I’ve seen in the flesh in green, and rather beautiful. It is however a bit tired, with plenty to go at...
Anyways, the petcock filter seems to be welded in place; any tips for getting it out undamaged as it needs a clean? (alas there are no tabs to grab... which I think my K2  has)
While I’m here, a gorilla last put in the spark plugs; and given it’s not my bike I baulked at too much torque on the spanner. I plan to ride it today and hope heat helps, but other than this any tips for removing overly tight ‘plugs.
Ta,
Simon
