Title: What am I doing wrong?
Post by: Davelu88 on May 15, 2023, 05:08:25 PM
Hi all , my 550 F is stalling and lurching forward when put in gear , I have tried to adjust at both ends and turned the adjuster screw till it gets resistance but to no avail . The clutch arm is moving freely and I made sure the little notches lined up , could the plates be stuck as not ridden for a bit while refurb took place . Any help appreciated 🙏

Not sure what the view of others are might be worth seeing before you try what I used to do on my XJ900.

I started it up on the centre stand so back wheel was off the ground then whilst holding the clutch in with engine at idle engaged first  gear then second gear sometimes into third gear then keeping the clutch lever held in just build the revs up  - very gently applying the  rear brake should release the clutch - mine would often release without the need for braking. Not a good idea if it has stood for ages as you do not want to damage the clutch basket.

I think you can actually reach the clutch basket plates via the oil filler with a long thin screwdriver to separate them.

When you feel resistance on the adjuster, you then need to turn it out again ¼-½ half a turn so it's not touching Dave.

All clutches tend to stick when not used,

I suggest when you go for ride, put the bike on the centre stand,

With it on tickover, put it in 1st,

Blip the throttle with the clutch pulled in,see if you can free the plates,

Sometimes change up to 3rd or 4th,and do it,

Obviously make sure the rear wheel is not touching the ground,

Should free it,

The more you use it, the better it will become,

Many thanks , I havehad on centre stand with back wheel spinning but no joy but will give another go tomorrow,  am I right turning the adjustment screw to the rear to feel resistance as tur ing it towards the front just loosens it constantly 😀

The adjusting screw should be turned until the notch on the lever and case align, if you turn it too far one way the internal lever will jump the cam and you have to take the case off to sort, please dont ask which way, i donr know!

If the lever has jumped the cam then the engine running on the stand method will not work - hopefully you have not over adjusted it.
