This is on my 1980 650, only bike I've ever had with this rubber bit fitted to side stand.
Anyone know the purpose of it, I cant figure out what its supposed to do.
Its not a bumper for when the stand goes back.

I think you will find that its function was to provide a 'soft' pick up of the stand if you left it down when you hit the first left hander? The aim, I believe, was that the soft rubber section would hit the ground first and flip the stand up rather than the hard metal part of the stand which could dig in and cause you to fall off?
I assume that the bike is not fitted with a side stand cut out switch, which I believe would have replace such devices on future bikes, so that you physically could not move off with the stand down?

As above. It also has a wear indicator on it, so if it wears below that level, you need a new one as it won't do its job any more.

Bike doesn't have a side stand switch.

Honda made side stands with the rubber foot for many bikes in the 80's.

Perfectly described. I know someone that had no rubber fitted on a Goldwing, ultimately forgot the stand was down and first left handed corner resulted in a very serious accident.

Only works though on later models that have the side stand located near the foot pegs, the 500 for instance is too far forward for this to work IMO.
