Title: CB400/4 Engine Bolts
Post by: Laverda Dave on October 11, 2023, 03:50:22 PM
The 'Rat Bike' project is moving along nicely and the engine cases are now empty and have had their first wash ready for a proper inspection.  The parts list is now at two pages though and is growing daily!

Various engine mounting bolts are missing (two front lowers and two at the top) and in one case a length of studding has been used as the upper rear engine mount, I do not know how the PO rode the bike with the engine moving around in the frame!

Does anyone have any of the following for sale (parts book listing used to describe the items):
92000-08080-0A - Bolt, Hex, 8x80 Upper front engine mounting bolts x 2
92000-10080-0A - Bolt, Hex, 10x80 Upper front engine mounting bolt x1
90106-333-000 - Bolt, FR, Engine Lower Hanger x 2 (These are the special bolts that pass through the lower frame rails at the front and bolt through to the lower crankcase of the engine and are frequently replaced by longer bolts that then cause the oil gallery to crack as they are too long! DSS or CMSNL don't have any).
90108-333-000 - Bolt, RR. Engine Upper Hanger x 1 (this is the long bolt used as the upper rear engine mounting, is passes through both sides of the frame and through the lug on the rear upper crankcase. On the R/H side it passes through the upper engine mounting plate that holds the main earth cable).

Thought I'd ask here first, condition is unimportant as I will be getting all the bolts etc replated.

Thanks
Dave

You sure you got your part numbers right Dave?

The 2 lower bolts are 10 x 74mm and should be 90101-377-000 if after 1046562

I'll have a look for the others

Got the 2 x 8 x 80mm bolts, also have the 2 x 10 x 74mm bolts. Also found a 10 x 80mm bolt.

Any idea of how long the upper rear bolt is?

Amazing Ken! I'll check the parts book tomorrow morning as out at a 60th birthday bash at the moment. I'll measure the upper rear bolt as well and get back to you👍

I bow to your knowledge Ken, I didn't read the parts list properly! It should be 90101-377-000. As a battery of interest do you know what the difference is between the two, was the later bolt shorter to avoid the potential of oil gallery damage?
The length of the rear top bolt is approx 213mm (from below the bolt head, I measured the original bolt on my other 400/4). It has a 14mm hex head.
Send me a PM with the cost and I'll sort out via PayPal (F&F) with the P&P.
Thanks again Ken.

Iirc the longer bolts were used with engine crash bars.

That's right Ted. My first 400/4 back in 1979 used to have crash bars fitted with longer bolts. I made the error of taking the crash bars off and just put the bolt straight back in with the inevitable result of a cracked crankcase.
I'm on my way over with the lower crankcase half now to the specialist welder to weld up the crack caused by the same issue. I thought it looked cracked when I gave it another good clean and when I met up with my mate on Tuesday who was the PO he confirmed the engine had an oil leak from what he thought was the filter housing area and was one of the reasons he stopped riding it. Funnily enough this is the area where I found the engine bolt to be missing.

I have a couple of very slightly shorter bolts at 10 x 72mm Dave, I'd be happy to send them as well and you could fit whatever you think looks the best when inserted.

I'll see what I have in the long bolt section, I may or may not have one suitable.

Ok, I've now got 2 x 10 x 72mm, 2 x 10 x 74mm, 1 x 10 x 80mm, 2 x 8 x 80mm bolts.

I didn't have a long bolt of 10 x 213mm but I do have a 10 x 270mm, it's possible to thread this down to 213mm and cut off the excess. Easy to do with a lathe or a really good tap and die set. Any use?

Thanks Ken.
I'll take all the shorter bolts please. CMSNL have the correct rear engine mount bolt for €14! I know there's P&P and the duty to pay on that but that's a pretty good deal considering their normal prices! I have to order a few parts that DSS don't appear to stock so I'll wait until I place that order and just add the bolt to it.
Let me know the cost of your parts and I'll sort the payment.
Thanks again for searching through your inventory of parts👍

Dave, just found a stash of bolts from the 400 build, is there anything you haven’t managed to get second hand yet in the engine bolt department?

Let me know if there’s ought you need and I’ll have a rummage with me ruler and see what I can ‘ferkle’ out of me stash

"Ferkle--ing yer-stash" sounds like something what goes on over yon wez-c'ntry, after copious amount of  participation in scrumpy-zider season.

Or perhaps in "zumma-zet" too  ;D ;D

You be careful there that Roo with all that Ferkle-ing.

Keeps me off the street, although I haven’t worked out whether it’s the ferkling or the cider that’s sending me blind.

Perhaps my Mam was right

Hi Roo. Thanks for the kind offer. I'm still at the dismantling stage at the moment and keeping a record of all the missing parts as I notice them. The engine is now apart and I've started to diamante the rolling chassis. The PO found the original key last week and dropped it over, it fits everything so that's a bonus 🙂. He's used a lot of stainless bolts throughout, they'll be going! I finally got the seat off and found the complete took kit under an immaculate tool tray lid, another result 👍. Shame about the airbox though, there's nothing left of it as he had fitted pod filters and junked everything else including the snorkel, breathers, plenum chamber and the white plastic hose connector fitted to the bottom of the air filter case.
He told me he had another box in his shed that may have some more parts in it but he flew off to Thailand for a six week holiday last Saturday so I'll have to wait if there are any goodies still to appear from the shed of rats!
If you have the rear upper engine mounting bolt that would be great but being a one-off special kind of bolt it's not something I guess you would have unless you have broken a bike for spares?
Meanwhile it's back to stripping the frame today and cleaning everything up ready to take to the zinc plater on Wednesday and before he goes for his hand op and then he's off for six months recovering.
At least it is moving forward and it has been saved from the damp garage it has resided in for 20+ years🙂.
Thanks again for your help, don't throw anything away yet😉

I’ve deffo got the white plastic thingy in the bottom of the air box, that’s yours and I have a complete battery box and some other stuff. I don’t have that big bolt you need but most of the others if you’re stuck. Keep asking as I took a lot off mine so it’s all residing in the spares shed festering. Much better being used so ask if you’re stuck Dave

I have a spare plastic airbox collector Dave but has one rubber missing ..yours if you want it. Maybe someone will have a spare rubber but obviously need a pic to determine which one is missing.

Thank you Roo, please put my name on the white plastic 'thingy'  :). Please dont send it yet as I'm playing the waiting game with the PO for when he comes back from his trip in 6 weeks time as he may have another box of bits in the shed of rats with all the missing parts. He thinks he kept all the original parts he removed over the years of customising the bike. He said he even has the set up instructions for the Pirana Ignition system I found fitted to the bike, remember those? It was a Boyer, original Honda points, Newton Electronic or Pirana Ignition Systems that were fitted back in the 80's 8)

Thank you Ash. I will take you up on the kind offer if the PO cannot find the original in the 'time capsule' of parts he thinks he still has in his rat shed although I won't know until he returns from his trip in 6 weeks. I will be in touch and will keep posting progress updates in the meantime.
Thanks Again
Dave

Those bolts arrived yet?

I had a senior moment Ken and forgot about that one.
Bolts arrived yesterday, thanks again for your generosity and for the carb felts as well👍.
I stripped the carbs today and they are THE worst I have ever seen inside! Every nut, bolt washer etc has now been cleaned and any burrs etc removed ready to take to the plater tomorrow including all the carb bits to be yellow passivated. I have made seven A4 pages of notes covering every item going to the plater just in case any get lost!

That’s a descent coat of varnish there Ken. Fuel has been sitting high level too. Definately warrants a clean.

Already done, my ultrasonic blew a resistor or something so I boiled them in ultrasonic fluid on the stove for an hour or so. Worked.
