Title: 350/4 or 400/4 instrument lamp holders - now sourced!
Post by: Orcade-Ian on October 19, 2023, 03:11:17 PM
When I built my 350/4 about 20 years back I had no instrument lamp harnesses and it's still like that.  I have checked CMSNL and they appear to have no part number but were originally sold with the instrument.  Anyone got a couple they are willing to sell? I think they are the same as 400/4 and probably most other bikes of that era.  I have various cannibalised looms and not one with the bulb holders.  It doesn't matter if they have been chopped - I would hope the bulb holder could be teased out of the rubber to replace the wires and I have bullets and sleeves.

Are you after the bulb holders with the rubber surround?
I might  have some old ones in fair condition.

Post, PM me or e-mail me a picture of what you are after I might have something you can use.

Hi Ted,
Thanks for the reply,
Culled from CMSNL this is the pic - part number marked 1 are the bulbs but the holders beneath have no number but are part of the instrument.  The originals are twinned,  going down to the bullets and have a grommet which goes through the chrome or stainless dish.  I only need the rubber covered bulb holders which press into the speedo/tach unless a complete setup is available. Ordinary bulb holders are too long - the originals only protrude a few millimetres from the instrument body

Wow - without wishing to hijack the thread, that's like a pre-internet website! Takes me back to the 1990's...

Ian, I'm sure I have some spare with a few damaged instruments.  I'll have a look through my boxes tomorrow.

Oxymoron Alert

Pre-internet website

Sites in the 90s were all fixed-width with content boxes hard coded in HTML to a fixed number of pixels. That was ok until bigger/wider screens came along and then laptops with different aspect ratios.

Auto-sizing (known as “responsive”) design took over in the 00s.

Then there were smartphones.

Considering how hard it was to test a page design against all possible screen sizes and resolutions (let alone all the different browsers that were around), it’s amazing that anything ever went live.

Nowadays it’s all done for us in the background and browsers all conform to a basic set of standards.

Here endeth the tech lesson.

Back to the subject…

Cheers Steve .. I kind of like the look of his website TBH. Old school like the bikes but I wish he would price everything !  A lot of people think he is Steve Cooper of VJMC/Magazine author fame (as I did once) but evidently a totally different chap as far as I know.

Can’t read it on a phone Ash. I’ll bet 50% of his visitors are on a mobile.

Search over folks,
I've managed to source 2 complete sets with correct colours - many thanks to all who contributed.  It just completes that little part of a bike I've been using quite a bit and had forgotten they were missing - not used in the dark presumably or perhaps never looked at the instruments when riding!

Thanks again,
Ian

Next you need those neat green led lamps that run cooler than a bulb with not too many lumens.

That sounds like a great idea Ted,
The bulbs are always blackened, so leds would be better - do you know of a source and do they fit inside without fouling anything?

For info, if you use low profile LED bulbs, they are quite bright (and directional) so I ended up putting some white nail varnish (from poundland) on the tops of the bulbs and the results were perfect.
These are the ones fitted in different colours :

I fitted the ones that are supplied by  Classic Car LED's as recommended by a member I did post the part numbers on a previous post. You will need to zoom in for the colours. The colours are in the left side of the columns.

They fit and are good quality so should last for many years.

Great info Ted,
Many thanks - I might try green and white to compare.

Get a long led strip and you can fit them underneath the frame ...  very gangsta!

The Green works really well for the instruments, on the idiot lights white is needed but can't remember which one for certain - I think its the orange lamp that needs white & blue main beam. Someone here will know a little bit of delecacy is needed when fitting the bulbs in the bulb holders due to the exposed nature as they are not fully  encapsulated.

Ted, the ones I listedbefore you are fully encapsulated - should that be of interest  ;) I also matched the colours to the idiot lenses .....

I did a full review on those bulbs when I first bought them a few years ago.

According to ClassicCarLEds the bulbs are wavelength sensitive, so for instance fitting white below a red filter isn't great, fit red below instead.

I would recommend getting a pair of the LED headlight bulb also featured in that thread, everyone who has ever seen them in real life has bought a pair, great if you have 2 bikes or buy with a mate and split the pack and the cost.

My experience of those in your link has not been good - very dull but they might have improved when I bought some about 5 yeas ago. They are forever improving so might be good.
