Title: Motul oil
Post by: Pauarc on November 01, 2023, 02:46:29 PM
Does anyone know if Motul 3000 4T 10w40 Mineral Oil has got zddp in it or can it be added and would it be worth adding

We have been here before Paul I suspect for commercial reasons many oil brands  do not show the make up of additatives like zddp. I think agreement was for the 750 high zinc contect is essential for other less beneficial or unsuitable.

I am clutching at straws now just can’t get a good gear change have fitted new clutch plates and steel plates  I also change the adjuster in the clutch new cable I may try castrol gtx classic 10w40 mineral which has got zddp in it but it looks like engine out and look at gearbox is there any other options

More liable to be a problem with the selector mechanism. I take it you have had a look?

Thinking about it logically, if you've ridden the bike and the new clutch hasn't burnt out, there must be enough oil getting to the right place.
Edit... Is it all gears or just 1st gear that's the problem?

Bad changing on all gears get worse when hot

Aah, I get the angle now  :)

Zddp isn't likely to affect that in any significant way. It's ultimate function is too stop cold welding of two parts under the most extreme pressure, not as general lubrication.  As I understand it from studies I've looked at some years ago, present in the range of 800~1100 ppm proved to be optimum but was specifically related to camshaft lobes and followers, this is tge principal reason for inclusion in older engine.

Worthwhile asking you to describe what specifically is the effect you're getting in regard to changing gear to discuss further. Is it going up down, clutched or not etc?  I dont feel it's the oil doing it.

Bike drag’s and clunky when selecting 1st then if I change up the box slowly not to bad odd times it may miss a great but not the same gear when coming down the box clunky and hard to change some time it goes into neutral ok get worse after a run and bike get hot tried setting adjuster with no gap no difference just slips

That ought to be fine, provided there's no play on the shaft (ooh mrs.!) when it's fully home. Not been into the Honda, but have on other bikes and they were a nice snug fit, but easy to pull off by hand.

That finger at 10 o'clock looks pretty notched, that could inhibit clutch plate movement?

On my 500 when I removed the rear lever with the tumbler type wheel (not the one at the front) I found the pivot was partly broken so fitted a new one. That said my gearshift was just a tad clunky.
Mild surface rust where it appears the bike has stood.

Only thing that stands out a bit for me though it might be normal is the poor visual match of the casings at the gearshft bearing.

I just looked on bike cover still off I see what you mean but the front and back line up spot on also there’s alignment Dowls I just think it’s the clutch dragging going to strip the clutch again and look at basket as Martin spotted marks on the outer

I can't be sure from the photo, but is the spacer missing from the selector drum stopper arm, because the spring looks coil bound and over tightened?

Good luck with your fault finding

Paul, all back together, thanks. I'll spruce up the frame, while the engine's out. So, a bit of work to do, before my handiwork gets tested!

I have looked at the outer basket and it had a bit of pitting where the friction plates run I run a fine file over them also I noticed that the new friction plates had sharp edge so I filed them off have to see if that helps
