Misc / Open / Ten years to go until electric...
« on: November 18, 2020, 06:08:40 PM »
So this is a bit of open one, but what are your thoughts on the move to electric?

I was talking with a friend about my search for a replacement car and he threw in the 'E' word. My reaction was 'no' . My next car might be my last fossil fuel one but I like a big old diesel estate and all the issues - cost, range, etc - of electric puts me off for now. But I imagine my next car ( they last for ten years or so for me)  could be my last petrol/ diesel one. But will I be confident in battery technology in 5-10 years time?...it's bound to have progressed by then.

Having said that, I haven't driven electric, and whilst Covid  is making it harder to go out and sample new vehicles, my understanding is its 0-60 in very little time (is that the same for an e-Micra?).  Plus (currently) zero road-tax. But when I drive a long way I don't want to wait for ages to charge up .. having waited ages for an available socket.

So that's cars. What about bikes? The e-TT looks quick, but so quiet.

And, do I sell them all now before they become worthless ?! (No!) There must be a long run- off period for petrol, surely, so maybe my kids can still inherit the fleet and get some use from them?

Cleaner, greener world is good for all of us, but I'm just interested in how that will change the things we love!

CB500/550 / April 1971 500/4 for anyone?
« on: May 28, 2020, 04:59:27 PM »
If anyone is looking, there is a low mileage (14k) 'ride or restore' in Freddie the Fat Frogs website and it seems to still be for available. Isn't April a very early model?  ...Sadly I'm not allowed it...   All 4pipes and a tank like new inside.

I'm sure there's a flaw that I haven't spotted?

CB650 / Correct location for the longer head bolts-CB650?
« on: December 17, 2019, 04:42:59 PM »
I'm rebuilding my 650 engine...its been apart for a couple of years and I can't recall where the two long bolts go to secure the head to the barrel ( as opposed to the other 10 which are a different size).

Haynes manual and CMSNL parts diagrams font help. I've also searched and posted in the alas site as they have more 650 action, but wondered if anyone here knew - or knows where I might find a manual that tells me?
Thanks!

Out & About / Harpenden, Classics on the Common, Weds. July 24th.
« on: July 22, 2019, 06:55:00 PM »
As the title says, classic vehicles, cars and bikez , in the common. Free entry - but they are collecting for lots of great charities. Last year there were about 900 vehicles. It's HUGE..

This year, it's due to be about 30 degrees in Wednesday. Not sure what time it all kicks off - mid/late afternoon and it goes on through the evening.

Too late to book in now, but park somewhere nearby and go and enjoy the huge array of vehicles.

Other Bikes / Superhawk

Spotted this on Pipeburn website. To my simple eyes it looks like a CB450, but it's not - 250cc?   I quite like it but might not be one for the purists. It does look a bit like a toy!

Misc / Open / Trans Euro Trail

I was watching some early morning TV today and saw a reference to this off-road route - which I hadn't heard of before. Not ideal for most SOHC models but some of the CL's might be able to have a go!

Just thought it might be of interest.

Misc / Open / Recommended chain rivetter
« on: April 23, 2018, 08:32:05 PM »
Hi, does anyone know / use a chain riveter they can recommend?.....at a reasonable price. So certainly sub £50.

Initially it's for the drive chain on a Kawasaki Zx6, so a fairly beefy chain. But I also want something that will last forever and for all bikes.

Wemoto tell me that they don't do a split link anymore which is a real pain.

Also, any other ways that you've all used to fit chain rivets would be interesting to hear.
Thanks!

Misc / Open / Honda CB900fz
« on: February 28, 2018, 01:39:11 PM »
Hi, I just bought a CB900fz dohc  and am getting it running for the spring. It was first registered in May 1979, so just got me thinking when were they first released in the UK. Does anyone know?

Also, the paint is non-original and yellow. Does anyone know what colours this year/ model came in? I've seen an early advert online but can't now find it to check.

Cheers
Andy.

Misc / Open / Martin Clunes parking...
« on: February 14, 2017, 03:56:41 PM »
The fun we have in supermarket carparks....

(Does my link work?)

Today for me it was the car that had swerved in and parked over one-and-a-half spaces. I wouldn't mind if they were a long way from the shop, but they were really close by...where we all want to park....!

Luckily my very old and tiny and battered Peugeot 106 can fit in half a space!

Misc / Open / Treating rust spots on a petrol tank
« on: December 17, 2016, 08:51:37 AM »
Some years ago I stripped a petrol tank and left the metal bare - result, lots and lots of tiny spots of rust. I rubbed these down and sprayed a single coat of undercoat on it and the spots reappeared through that. Doesn't seem to have become much worse in 5 years, just lots of bumps and little rust spots through the paint

I'm planning now to strip and repaint this for use on a project - does anyone have experience of how I should treat the metal / anything I can paint it with to stop these coming through again and to let me kave a nice smooth finish?

thanks
Andy

Misc / Open / Oil drain plug size for helicoil
« on: September 05, 2015, 07:20:43 PM »
My Cb650 oil sump threads are stripped (for the oil drain bolt). Part numbers are the same for the CB550. I bought a helicoil 12.5 x 1.25 kit but it seems far too big for the new bolt I bought from DS. So, question is - what size kit should I have bought to fit this bolt? Thanks!

This Saturday. Takes over the whole town centre. Last year had live rock 'n' roll bands at one end, blues-stuff at the other and loads of cars and bikes in between + a BBQ outside the butchers and plenty of pubs. Recommended - check out the video!

Misc / Open / dustbin fairing for cb750
« on: June 13, 2015, 08:14:35 AM »
I've always liked dustbin fairings but this doesn't quite work for me - maybe it's the saddlebags paired with the race fairing that looks odd?
