Misc / Open / Cafe Racers on Discovery Turbo
« on: January 08, 2011, 12:05:13 PM »
Weekday nights at 8pm and then at 8.30pm. A US programme showing some chaps living out there cafe racer dreams!  An interesting selction of old bikes being chopped up including: a CX500....tricky to make this look good although the guy had done a nice job - still made for a desperately ugly machine; Honda CB twins; I think I saw a CB750 in the background too; SR/XT500 - nice old single; XS650.

All in all the content is a bit thin with plenty of ..." in the last episode we saw".....repetitions to flesh it out. But what the hell, it's nice old 'bikes on TV midweek and I'm enjoying it!....apart from when it clashes with Coronation Street and then I have to retire to my cellar.

Anyone else seen it?

CB650 / Vale spring compressor - recommendations
« on: January 02, 2011, 06:29:19 PM »
Does anyone have a valve spring compressor that they would recommend (for use on a CB engine)? I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for but I've seen a model by Sealey for c.

Misc / Open / Christmas Books
« on: December 10, 2010, 09:10:54 PM »
I need a Christmas pressie for myself. I thought I read somewhere about a CB SOHC book - maybe an Osprey publishing one, but I can't now find anything similar.

Does that ring a bell for anyone?

CB500/550 / Fork Top Nuts
« on: November 29, 2010, 10:30:19 AM »
My CB650 runs 35mm forks that slot into a set of Cb550 yokes. They have various air assist elements on them (pipes, valves etc) that look messy, foul my handlebars & that I don't really want.

Anyway, I thought that rather than try to blank off the various holes it might be simpler and easier to replace the nuts at the top of the stanchions with some "standard" ones.

My questions is,  does anyone know if these fittings / threads for these nuts are the same size for my bike as for the 550? If so, can I just pick up a set of nuts from the more common 550 stanchions and use those?

...and here's a piccie of the RHS fork top so you can see the nut/fittings I want to eliminate. The air valve sticks up and fouls the handlebars when it's in the right position and there should also be a pipe (similar to an old style bicycle pump end fitting) that runs from the hole under the valve to the other fork top.

Thanks in advance!
Andy

CB500/550 / I need an internal throttle!
« on: November 27, 2010, 06:11:28 PM »
Internal throttles (twistgrip) ......anyone got one, used one, know where I can find one?  (and I'm thinking old bike stuff, not hugely expensive custom built ones).

I know that old bikes like '40's Indians had these. I also read somewhere online that there are a couple of Hondas that had them but I've certainly never noticed one. So, does anyone know if there are any out there from a factory model?

CB500/550 / Alloy brake reservoirs
« on: November 20, 2010, 07:16:35 PM »
I'm trying to establish what master cylinder / reservoir I've got....this would be easier if I posted a piccie but I don't have a working camera here so:

Mine has the cylindrical reservoir which all the early CB500/550's seem to have, but the reservoir is quite deep (about 2 inches) and made of plastic.

For the look I'm striving for on my rebuild I need the all metal / alloy reservoir that I've seen on other bikes. These ones are also only about an inch deep.

So the questions are:
- what bike is the deep, plastic reservoir from?
- which model are the shallow, alloy reservoirs from?
...(and does anyone have a spare shallow, alloy one they wish to part with..!)

Thanks!
Andy

Interchangeability / Petrol
« on: August 14, 2010, 06:43:10 PM »
The unleaded petrol at my local BP station (Hertford - Rush Green just off the A10) works in all my bikes - and also in my mates CB750.

On that basis I assume it would work in any SOHC Honda, indeed pretty much any motorcycle, however, suggest you try with just a little bit to start with & make sure it is compatible.

OK, so I know I'm slightly late in posting this but I thought you might like to see my fathers day pressie from my baby daughter.....how did she know I would like this?!

I think the riding attire & white helmet is sooooo cool & suits the 'bike perfectly.

CB650 / DCB650 - distance between fork legs?
« on: August 07, 2010, 04:56:18 PM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm putting a 400/4 wheel in in CB650 forks (air assisted ones) & trying to juggle spacers & bearings at the moment. The forks I have are pictured below & have an airline running between them at the top.

Can anyone advsie what the distance between the fork legs should be (at the axle) when they are all tightened up?   (ie - so the total of the wheel hub and spacers?)

One of the guys on the US site said the forks are off an 81 Custom or 82 Nighthawk - which sounds rabout right, so if anyone has similar forks and can measure the distance it would be a huge help!

Misc / Open / the price of old bikes today..
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:24:33 PM »
It's not quite an SOHC...but the right era.   Is this price for real? ...and is there any chance that my CB400/550/650 hybrid will ever achieve this......!

CB650 / Dark grey; matt caliper paint.
« on: April 17, 2010, 08:00:34 AM »
Has anyone seen any dark gray / graphite caliper paint - in a matt finish?

I've seen this on lots of older bikes - usually with Lockheed calipers and think it looks quite nice ...needs to be a matt finish though.

Thanks!

CB500/550 / Head bearing dust seal
« on: April 10, 2010, 08:45:36 AM »
I'm in the process of replacing head bearings.

Looking at the CMSNL parts diagram for the 550K3 the lower bearing is built up from the following:

Washer (9)
Dust seal (5)
Race (8)
Ball bearings (24)
Race (3)

(numbers in brackets are the numbers on the CMSNL diagram).

I've bought aftermarket taper bearings so am ignoring parts (8/3/24). Question is - Number 5, the dust seal, do I need this or is this also part of the "bearing". Working assumption is that as my taper bearings are sealed I will not need this.

Also, do I need the washer..? (part 9).
Cheers.

CB500/550 / Chain adjuster question.
« on: April 02, 2010, 06:34:36 PM »
I've got two 550 swingarms and a set of 550 chain adjusters - and they don't appear to fit correctly. Picture below doesn't really do justice to it but there is a 1mm gap between the swingarm plates and the inside edges of the adjusters. Is this normal?  Should I expect this to close up when the axle is tightened....seems unlikely as the gap is so large.

Can someone post a close-up piccie of a fitted adjuster so I can see how that looks - I don't think I've missed anything out but can only think that the adjusters aren't actually 550 ones.

Cheers!
