That 400 -  'period mods 'thoough - it woule be more of a crime if someone had created it recently.

Clearly lots of bikes were chopped about at a time when theywere just old and plentiful. I'm a bg fan of modified bikes so long as they are well done - but it is a pity to do it to a complete bike, or make changes that can't be reversed. Far better to start with a wreck or a frame and build up from there. Restorations aren't everyones cup of tea and can cost a fortune.

I've been looking half-heartedly at old CG125's and similar tiddlers and it's a shame to see how many of those have become 'brat bikes' and are being touted for large sums purely based on not have a rear mudguard!

I’ve heard of that technique before but never tried it .... I’ll have a go next time. My favourite is always to find something to hold the brake lever overnight - job done  ( and thanks to the postie for littering my drive with his wretched elastic bands!)

It’s interesting to see the number of Honda’s advertised as ‘cast iron investments’ on auction sites. Is there such a thing? ... Maybe if we all downed-tools for a while then the prices would falter (a sort of SOHC Circuit-breaker, to use the current terminology!)

I've been to 3 'Post Offices' in local villages and in small towns and none of them will do this for me (I've change my tax class) .. They don't seem to know what it is?!   One suggested I just send the log book to the DVLA...putting Historic in that box.

Has anyone done that? I'm putting my faith in the postman now.

CB500/550 / Re: April 1971 500/4 for anyone?

I must be too optimistic....If it turns over it'll run. Plus I don't mind a bit of 'patina' !

I hadn't spotted the 550 badges ! Lesson to self - pay more attention.

Aren't those exhausts hard to come by though- even if they need repairing?

CB500/550 / April 1971 500/4 for anyone?
« on: May 28, 2020, 04:59:27 PM »
If anyone is looking, there is a low mileage (14k) 'ride or restore' in Freddie the Fat Frogs website and it seems to still be for available. Isn't April a very early model?  ...Sadly I'm not allowed it...   All 4pipes and a tank like new inside.

I'm sure there's a flaw that I haven't spotted?

I've spent some time in the sun today re-reading November 2014 Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics where Niall McKenzie rides and rates the 500/4 (alongside a race bike version). It doesn't sound like an S7 in that!

I've seen it a couple of times now on my lunchtime walk . Red and fully restored. Does it belong to anyone on here? Next time I'll be ready to take a piccie!

for the same reasons, i've been thinking about 400/4 front end...and I have a set of yokes and wheels lying around. I just haven't got round to it yet and I keep wondering about originality...although sa mine started life as a bathtub 3TA and it's now a 500 scrambler, it's hardly original!

I have a lovely old 500 twin - scrambler pipes down one side and it's one of my favourite bikes to ride ( not least because it's so simple it never goes wrong). Only problem is the front brake which is pretty awful.... I have to really plan ahead!

CB650 / Re: Correct location for the longer head bolts-CB650?
« on: December 18, 2019, 08:19:47 AM »
I've tested the depth of the holes and they are a 'll the same....however that was with the head off (so checking depth from the bottom up) - thinking about a dry build, reminds me that for the head itself , the casting is higher  for the two holes either side of the camchain at the back. They are likely to be the culprits.

I'll have a dry run today and see..

It shows part numbers, so it's clear there are two different bolt types, but the diagram doesn't show where the bolts go...so I have 10 bolts/ bolt holes but two bolts are  longer and there is no obvious difference in the boot holes ( or none that I can see!). There must be a reason why they are different though.

Nb...it's where the 550 has studs sticking up from the crankcase to take the barrels, the 650 has bolts instead. Pain.
