CB500/550 / Re: April 1971 500/4 for anyone?
« on: May 28, 2020, 06:13:27 PM »
I must be too optimistic....If it turns over it'll run. Plus I don't mind a bit of 'patina' !

I hadn't spotted the 550 badges ! Lesson to self - pay more attention.

Aren't those exhausts hard to come by though- even if they need repairing?

CB500/550 / April 1971 500/4 for anyone?
« on: May 28, 2020, 04:59:27 PM »
If anyone is looking, there is a low mileage (14k) 'ride or restore' in Freddie the Fat Frogs website and it seems to still be for available. Isn't April a very early model?  ...Sadly I'm not allowed it...   All 4pipes and a tank like new inside.

I'm sure there's a flaw that I haven't spotted?

I've spent some time in the sun today re-reading November 2014 Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics where Niall McKenzie rides and rates the 500/4 (alongside a race bike version). It doesn't sound like an S7 in that!

I've seen it a couple of times now on my lunchtime walk . Red and fully restored. Does it belong to anyone on here? Next time I'll be ready to take a piccie!

for the same reasons, i've been thinking about 400/4 front end...and I have a set of yokes and wheels lying around. I just haven't got round to it yet and I keep wondering about originality...although sa mine started life as a bathtub 3TA and it's now a 500 scrambler, it's hardly original!

Welcome aboard! That exhaust looks a little non-standard too....and loud!

I have a lovely old 500 twin - scrambler pipes down one side and it's one of my favourite bikes to ride ( not least because it's so simple it never goes wrong). Only problem is the front brake which is pretty awful.... I have to really plan ahead!

CB650 / Re: Correct location for the longer head bolts-CB650?
« on: December 18, 2019, 08:19:47 AM »
I've tested the depth of the holes and they are a 'll the same....however that was with the head off (so checking depth from the bottom up) - thinking about a dry build, reminds me that for the head itself , the casting is higher  for the two holes either side of the camchain at the back. They are likely to be the culprits.

I'll have a dry run today and see..

It shows part numbers, so it's clear there are two different bolt types, but the diagram doesn't show where the bolts go...so I have 10 bolts/ bolt holes but two bolts are  longer and there is no obvious difference in the boot holes ( or none that I can see!). There must be a reason why they are different though.

Nb...it's where the 550 has studs sticking up from the crankcase to take the barrels, the 650 has bolts instead. Pain.

CB650 / Correct location for the longer head bolts-CB650?
« on: December 17, 2019, 04:42:59 PM »
I'm rebuilding my 650 engine...its been apart for a couple of years and I can't recall where the two long bolts go to secure the head to the barrel ( as opposed to the other 10 which are a different size).

Haynes manual and CMSNL parts diagrams font help. I've also searched and posted in the alas site as they have more 650 action, but wondered if anyone here knew - or knows where I might find a manual that tells me?
Thanks!

It's a nice spot. The high street is closed and full of old cars and bikes. BBQs, beer and bands..and ice creams. Well worth a visit!
