CB750 / Which 750 ? Advice Please !
« on: April 27, 2016, 01:26:51 PM »
Hi ll,

Just wondering if there are there any 750's to avoid ?  I've run out of projects and to avoid decorating and gardening, I'm considering another bike and I'm thinking that a 750 would be a great bike for the wife to pillion on as and when the sun appears !  Are there any common problems, or specific models to avoid ?  Any common issues with US bikes etc etc ?

Any help & thoughts would be appreciated !

I also have no space left in my garage and not much more cash, so any recommendations on bank robbery and/or Tardis construction would also be appreciated.

CB350/400 / 400/4 Forks
« on: March 18, 2016, 09:41:28 AM »
I had my first trip out on the 400/4 of 2016 a few days ago and I was quickly reminded that the front end does seem a bit under damped.  Noticed it on the first few post rebuild rides last year, but having never owned a 400 before, I'm not sure what's 'normal' !

The forks were rebuilt with the rest of the bike last year with the old springs and fresh 10wt oil, but there does seem to be a bit of bounce to the front end - should I be looking to move to 15wt oil, or trying more volume of exiting oil ? anything else to be checking ?

Also noticed a very minor weep of oil from n/s drain bolt, which had that horrible stripping thread feel when I attempted to nip it up a bit, so I'm pondering if I going to be able to helicoil without a complete strip of that fork leg - I'm guessing I'll have to to make sure there's no swarf from drill / tap for the insert ?

Thoughts and advice welcomed !

CB350/400 / Master Cylinder Rebuild
« on: December 21, 2015, 08:28:19 AM »
Could do with some help / wisdom again please !

I have noticed a small brake fluid leak from around the brake lever recently, so I ordered a m/c repair kit and set about dismantling it over the weekend.  Didn't get to far before running into trouble !  The rubber boot has perished and I had to dig out the remains of it, but I'm struggling to get the wire retainer out even before tackling the circlip that I was expecting to be the real fun !   Any tips or tricks welcomed !!

CB350/400 / Nearly There !
« on: September 10, 2015, 11:25:51 AM »
Hi  all !

Finally got to a stage where I could MOT the bike last week !  It took a couple months longer than expected, but I'm quite pleased with my first attempt at a bike rebuild, even if it may not be to everybody's taste !

Much to my surprise it fired up and ran really well straight away with only a minor idle speed adjustment.  Bit tappety to start with, but have now reset them, and it sounds great !

Managed to lose idle on the way home, so I'm assuming that I'll be removing and cleaning idle jets when I get 5 minutes, and then I can hopefully put a few on it before it's first oil change.

Have to say that the front brake is interesting !  MOT tester said it was better than he'd expect from a 400/4 - would hate to be relying ona bad one !

CB350/400 / Head Gasket
« on: June 10, 2015, 08:42:49 AM »
Morning All,

My 400 engine rebuild is finally getting close to completion - looking forward to hearing it run again !

Having reassembled the head, I unpacked the head gasket from the gasket set to find a small dent on upper surface of the #2 cyl fire ring.  It's a small ripple in the metal, and I'm wondering if I should write it off, or if it will be Ok when torqued down ?

Any thoughts please ?

CB350/400 / Carb Rebuild Question
« on: May 12, 2015, 12:10:49 PM »
Could do with some help / guidance / experience on carb rebuilding please !

Carbs are all stripped for cleaning and new gaskets & O rings, but it appears someone has already been playing as some of the parts were not in the same order in each carb !

From what I can see in the parts diagram, I should have the following order of parts on each of the throttle shafts that enter the to p of the carb bodies;
•   Captive washer / Spring holder
•   Spring
•   Felt washer ?
•   Stepped plastic bush that locates into the body housing

And then inside the carb body;
•   Plain plastic bush ~ 4mm wide
•   Throttle / slider arm with securing screw and lock tab

Does that sound right ?

Next question re’ needle valves – I’ve renewed the O ring, but the valve body now doesn’t sit very far into the casting and as a result the locating tab does not sit flat against the casting.  So either I’ve used an O ring that’s too fat, or, it’s normal for a new O ring, and I should adjust the float height to compensate  - any thoughts or experience please ?

Thanks in advance for any help !

CB350/400 / Engine Rebuild
« on: April 20, 2015, 09:15:45 AM »
Thinking about re-assembly of the engine whilst waiting for the case to be blasted and re-boring work - assume oil seals should be dry fit to the crank cases i.e. no sealant on outer face ?

Any tips, or potential 'gotchas' when re-assembling the 400 unit ?

Thanks !

CB350/400 / 400/4 Rebore Required?
« on: April 08, 2015, 09:32:41 PM »
Engine striped now and I was hoping I'd get away with a light deglaze of the bores that I measured at 51.0 (but only have vernier callipers available) Ring gaps were on the max tolerance so I have ordered a set of std rings, but subsequently left the barrels with a machine shop to hone but they have mic'd bores at 51.1 - does that sound like a rebore to next size is required ?  Will hang on until the new rings arrive and will check gaps, but should I be prepared for a rebore ?

If so, any recommendations for oversize pistons ?

Thanks

CB350/400 / Cylinder Head Washers
« on: March 29, 2015, 06:23:09 PM »
Just started to strip the engine.

Do I need to renew the copper / steel washers that go under the cylinder head nuts ?  I will definitely need a couple of the rubberised washers under the pillar nuts, so does anyone know a good source ? Just checked cmsl and  fell over when I noticed the cost !

CB350/400 / Fork Seal - Damage to Case
« on: March 04, 2015, 06:55:30 PM »
More advice please !

I'm renewing fork seals as part of my rebuild and having struggled to remove the RHS fork seal, I can now see why from the attached photo.  Seal appears to have been glued in , and covered up some prior abuse !

There are a few deep gouges into the machined seal facing sufaces of the ally casting.  I can dress the edges of the damage to remove sharp edges, but am I wasting my time ?  Looks serious to me, but this is all new to me !  Can this be reworked, or am I looking at replacing teh case ?  - any advice greatly received !

Thanks in advance !

CB350/400 / Tappet Covers
« on: February 25, 2015, 07:26:20 PM »
Anyone else had tappet covers seize and if so is there a trick to get them free ?  Most of them behaved, but I've managed to round off 2 that don't want to play - bloody ally caps are as soft as cheese !

Tried to get some purchase with a screw driver on the wide edge of the cover, but I'm now breaking the cap into pieces.  Is this familiar to anyone ?  I'm starting an engine rebuild (first) so how important is it to loosen tappets before lifting the rocker cover ?

Thanks for any help / guidance !

CB350/400 / Bottom yoke & center stand questions
« on: December 29, 2014, 04:54:28 PM »
Hi all !  New to the forum following a recent 400/4 purchase and enthusiatic start to a restoration ! Very little bike experience, so there's a good chance that this is a stupid question and likely to be followed by a lot of others !

Removed the steering column the other day and discarded the old head brgs, but now have what appears to be the outer race still on the bottom yoke column with a rubber seal beneath it ?  Is it actually the inner race and therefore needs to be removed before I replace with taper brgs ?  Just thought that I had better check before I attack it !

Also had fun removing the centre stand as the stand had seized to the pivot pin and it was the pin rotating in the frame mounts. Managed to get enough space to cut the pin and then get the stand off, but now assuming I'll need some help with someone with a press to get the remainder of the pin out ?  New pins available ? Anyone else had similar fun ?

Just need to sort the above and seek some advice on repair to a split weld on the swinging arm, and I can get these parts blasted and painted /  powdered ( still undecided on that bit !)

Looking forward to your thoughts, help and enlightenment !

Andy
