CB500/550 / CB550K3 Tribute Project Complete
« on: June 29, 2023, 05:34:10 PM »
After nearly 2 years, and a lot of cash, I have finally finished recreating my mates old CB550K3.
This project was completed as a tribute to a friend who sadly passed away 2 years ago. He managed to totally wreck his bike over 20 years ago but, for some reason, kept the remains in a shed where it was discovered after his passing.
His original bike was a category B write off so I have had to source a new frame and crank case, thus changing the frame and engine numbers - hence calling it a tribute rather than a rebuild or restoration.
I think he would be rather pleased with the final outcome.
During the course of this project I did reach out for help and advice and am thankful to people like BryanJ, Oddjob and Nurse Julie for their time and expertise (I hope I have remembered their names properly) as well as many others. The people on this forum are nothing short of amazing.

At the moment I want to use as much of Rob’s original bike as possible but further down the line I may make some changes. When he bought this bike I bought a 550F2 in that lovely deep burgundy colour so I’ve always actually preferred the F models.
The clocks themselves are second hand (at least) but amazingly the mileage is to within 2,000 miles of the originals. How’s that for luck.
As to clock cases, one was out of shape but after a bit of effort I managed to get it pretty straight and, with the aid of tin foil and elbow grease, got them looking really nice.

This is it so far. New frame, crank casing, fork stanchions, fork ears (I might have bought them off Oddjob) and handlebars. Top end, all internal workings, engine covers, carbs, Airbox, wiring loom, fork sliders and rear suspension from the original bike. Wheels are stainless and have been built around the original hubs. I’ve had the tank repaired and resprayed along with the original side panels. sourced new mudguards, seat, clocks and rear light but I have managed to save the clock chrome casings, mounting plate, two indicators, the head light (God knows how it survived) and all handlebar controls. Although the finished article will be far from pristine I am considering getting a new set of pipes as all 4 of the original sustained a degree of damage ranging from cosmetic right up to that will never sit straight again.

Haha Sesman. It looks as if he’s just told me it was running when he parked it up. Truth be told this bike was written off in a very nasty accident nearly 25 years ago. My mate who owned (and crashed it) sadly passed away at the end of 2021 and the bike was found tucked away in one of his sheds. I’m trying to get most of it (it needed a new frame and crankcase housing and various other bits) back on the road as a tribute to a very good friend as I’m sure he was saving it as a retirement project.

Well done Oddjob and Ted. It is indeed from the old steering lock which I had to drill out due to there being no key. I have fitted a replacement so the spring is surplus to requirements (thank goodness).
As usual guys, many thanks for the help. This old thing is going to live again

The spring is very loosely wound and is 12mm in diameter and 15mm in length. The actual wire is very thin, only about a mil at most. It doesn’t look as if it can be a return spring but rather some sort of spacer/cushion 🤷🏻‍♂️

Does anyone recognise where this flimsy little spring may have come from - it seems to be left over on my CB550K3 rebuild.

Desperately Seeking!! / Re: CB550K3 Grommets

Problem solved. I found a second hand bracket on eBay with all of the grommets in place. Guess I have a spare bracket for the future - just in case  ;)

I need the 3 small rubber stoppers and 2 mounting grommets which go on the clocks mounting bracket. It looks as if DS and CMS can no longer source these items so does anyone have any spares they want to sell or any idea as to where I might be able to get these.
TIA

CB500/550 / Re: CB550k3 Rear hub movement
« on: February 11, 2023, 04:51:32 PM »
I get what you’re saying Ted. The movement was noticed after the wheel had been mounted first time  but the spindle had not been fully torqued up because there is still a wee bit of work to be done. Some of the movement may have been overcome if it was fully torqued but the fact that the bearing was not properly seated would probably have come back to bite me on the bum.

Many thanks for all of the advice and tips. Had another go at that bearing and it did indeed go in another couple of mm before being fully seated. Once everything was greased up and put back together the retainer fitted almost perfectly flush and the movement in the flange was gone. The wheel is back on the bike and is as steady as a rock 👍

The wheel bearings came from David Silver. The left one was an original part and the right one was an OEM part.

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm going to try to have another look at it before the weekend and will let you know how it goes

This is the flange. The grooves on the inside are deep and full - I can’t see any signs of wear.

Sprocket carrier looks fine but it has been so well cleaned that you probably wouldn't see signs of wear. I have taken photos but the files are too big to share.
I did notice that the retaining ring sits a few mm proud of the flange - could it be that the bearing isn't seated deep enough?
