Cheers lads....yes - last time i used it i swtiched the fuel off....maybe i should have ran it til the fuel drained from the carbs? i did nip out in the garage just now and it pretty well started on the button (didnt go out on it) as it was wet outside....i think its gonna be dry tomorrow so ill take it round the block. I think ill probably take it out for a quick spin. Guessing ill do this once a month....?

Anyway happy xmas all....thanks for all the help ive had this year.

CB350/400 / 400/4 Garaged over the winter.
« on: December 23, 2023, 06:48:34 PM »
As above. mines not been used since nipping over to Roo's house for help/schooling. I was in the garage earlier cleaning the z (every other week through the winter to keep it up to scratch) as i use it every day for work. Finished cleaning and thought "hmm...may as well kick the 400 over as its not been started for a while....famous last words.....i did get it started but only just after about 15 mins or so of firing the starter/choke on and off and then once i got it started coaxing it into life...once running if i snapped the throttle open it would die instantly but not all the time....question is, am i right in thinking im gonna need to nip round the block on this once a month just to keep stuff turned over? Both my Hyper and moreso the RSV4 start on the button after being left for 6 months....so guessing with the 400 it is what it is...and old carbed bike or does it need further tuning?

Any guidance/advice is greatly accepted! - oh - yes it does stay on an optimate as well.

Member 4 Sales / 400/4 Cam Chain tensioner.

Having a clear up since the rebuild. While the motor was apart i changed the CamChain tensioner for one of those billet alloy ones. Apparently the OEM ones are still worth something. If anyone is interested in mine...30 quid delivered. Its hardly done any miles... (6200) so apparently Bryan tells me theres loads of life left in it yet!

Misc / Open / Re: What do you own 2019? (Main bike only please)
« on: October 13, 2023, 10:14:40 AM »
Im proud to say after owning it for 10 years (bought my 2 brothers out when my dads passed away) then it sitting in a shipping container for 7 years, then 3 years building it...ive now used it a few time to get to work on and also to go round Roo's house to talk bollocks like most middle aged bikers do...

Its not my main bike...its my old man's so will stay with me for as long as humanly possible...ive never owned a bike this old (my main daily is a 2014 z1000 with a shit load of mods) along with a Hypermotard 1100 evo sp and an old pre aprc RSV4 factory which after 11 years of ownership still scares the shit out of me...

One thing i will say, as i said to Roo. Its growing on me, definately, when i go in the garage it almost says... "pretty sure this bit might need adjusting...go on, you'll feel better once you do..."

Not sure i can do all the test on the doc - ive got a digital meter so not sure how to set mine the same way but the youtube video i found both checks are fine.....as ive got a lithium battery and, a brand new reg/rec to match the lithium battery (wasnt cheap) - ive just started it again and as i rev it i am seeing the voltage increase not jumping masses but it is going up.....if i leave it at tickover i see about 12.74 ish - rev it to about 3k and it goes up to 12.8......if its dry tomorrow ill take it to work again and then see what the voltage is...

36
Brilliant - many thanks....ill go through.

37
Ooh - handy - ill see if i can find it...found a you tube video and ive got the 0.8 resistance between the coils so thats a good start...

Soooooooo, the charging might actually be working.... (im not sure) as theres an munit on it im leaving it on the optimate when its not being used....the checks ive done are....

Run the engine, stick a positive wire from the meter on the battery line.... and im seeing about 12.77v at tickover...if i blip the throttle i see it start to climb to about 12.8....not the usual jump id see from a modern bike...ie 12.5v  - blip the throttle then see it go to over 13v.

Again i grounded the black wire from the meter on the frame and stuck the positive in each of the yellow wires coming from the generator....im seeing about 1.6volts...is that right?

Anymore tests i can do?

Post fiddling this evening I don't think the charging circuit is working as the munit registered 10.4v at 5pm this afternoon after it had been at work all day...something else to check tomorrow.!
