CB500/550 / Re: Brake calliper silicone grease
« on: February 19, 2024, 11:07:26 AM »
Ate grease is - or used to be - first choice and was used by professional mecs. The tube says: compatible with: brake fluids DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1. It's expensive though, so I wonder what alternatives there are. Some suggest you may use vaseline just as well. I don't know about the latter.
But that Ate grease is made for the brake job and therefore 100% safe.

550 is a different system than 500
I know, Mick. The question about connections and routing regarding that particular CB550K airbox keeps reemerging in various fora. That's why I asked David to post some pics.

Mine (. 550 k1) goes straight down between the carb inlets then across the engine top casing to the junction on the lower rhs of airbox, not over the carbs.
Davis, if possible, I'd like to see some pics of it.

No, at one end (in the thicker part) of the TUBE ASSY., BREATHER there's supposed to sit a little foam in there.

Some suggest it is supposed to end at the little guide bracket RH side near to where the battery breather tube ends,

Yes you can blank the holes, remove the gubbins from inside and use a 500 air filter
Excellent advice.

I love gaiters. In spite of over 140.000 kms, they are still as new and so far I did not have to replace any seal yet.
Gaiters are for men, shiny legs are for sissies who shave their legs. Sorry, just another opinion. ;)

Actually it wasn't difficult to spot. I have heard enough CB500 and 550s in my life. On hearing the sound and a quick glance at where the dial was, I concluded: this can't be right. Then I had a look where the red zone begins.
So it was the sound in combination with the rpm the dial indicated.

So... the tachometer is from a CB750?

As far as Honda carbs, always from top, not from tip.

For those interested in the recommended settings (Honda) back then, consult the overview attached. It has been out for years and has not been challenged so far. It does NOT deal with aftermarket parts.

CB500/550 / Re: I'm curious as to what this would really do

Ken, the 550 had 3 extra teeth on the rear wheel sprocket to make the overall gearing the same i think
Except for the CB550K3-ED which had 34 teeth like the CB500. In continental Europe that particular K3 model was marketed as the tourer version of the somewhat sportier CB550F2. See the ad below.

Personally I would have some wood or leather inbetween the jaws of the pliers, when used on vulnerable materials like brass.

This does not refer to the airbox side, but to the correct orientation of the boots between the carbs and the head.
