CB350/400 / Big end bearing help
« on: April 11, 2024, 07:16:35 PM »
My green and brown sets of big end bearings have arrived and I have measured them up, and once again its not going to be as easy as I hoped.

Im not sure if I've read it wrong but my con rods are C2 C2 C2 C2, my plastigauge measurements are 0.050mm 0.050mm 0.050mm 0.038mm. And to throw more confusion when measuring with the micrometer I get a clearance (32 - the diameter measured) of 0.0138mm 0.0163mm 0.0163mm 0.0087mm.

I measured with the brown bearings first and was surprised at the big gap. 0.050mm is too big what is the tolerance? The connecting rod chart is a bit more confusing than the main bearings chart.

CB350/400 / Rebuild parts questions
« on: April 04, 2024, 08:26:45 PM »
I've seen a few people mention that the typical full engine gasket/seal sets are missing a few things. What exactly are they missing? I've got it from here because of no stock in some other places https://www.bertrumsbikebits.co.uk/product/honda-cb-400-4004-cb400-4-cb400f-full-gasket-set/.

Is it worth replacing the cirlips? If so how many are there exactly?

What other small things do you normally miss?

I'm placing a big order with yamira so don't want to have to end up paying another chunk for shipping on a few missed things.

so far I've noted these in my google sheets file:
cam chain
Cam chain tensioner blade
Cam chain guide blade
Cam chain tensioner blade damper rubber
Camchain tensioner arm
Clutch lifter plate bearing
Cush drive rubber
Engine oil seal kit
Exhaust silencer to collector box gasket
exhaust downpipe to collecter
Exhaust No. 3 down pipe to collector box clamp
Exhaust No. 1 down pipe to collector box clamp
Exhaust port gasket
Oil filter
rubber damper
exhaust collar

CB350/400 / Buying large amounts of parts from yamiya or impex
« on: April 04, 2024, 12:02:02 PM »
Ive bought my bearings from yamiya and impex because even with expensive postage its cheaper than DSS.

I've been comparing the prices on yamiya to DSS and most of the parts are almost half the price. Has anyone ordered lots of parts from yamiya? Whats the postage and tax been like?

CB350/400 / main/big end bearing size differences

What are the size differences for the bearing, i.e between brown and green?

Or could someone point me in the direction of some documentation?

CB350/400 / Engine rebuild Parts list
« on: February 25, 2024, 01:56:38 PM »
After googling and having a look through older posts and not finding anything, I thought I'd ask.

Does anyone know if there is a list of what to replace when doing an engine rebuild? It's my first engine rebuild, the furthest I've been so far is taking the barrels off.

What is definitely worth replacing and what is worth replacing because its already stripped?

CB350/400 / Allen or hex head bolts?
« on: February 22, 2024, 03:16:54 PM »
My engine is fully stripped and the cam tensioner hole has been repaired.

Quite a few of the original hex bolts are worse for wear so I've been looking to get at least the crankcase bolts replaced. Is there a best choice when choosing between allen or hex head bolts? There seem to be a lot more allen head replacements.

Can anyone recommend some companies that do sets of bolts? I've seen CMSK mentioned and they do a good range of allen head bolts, but if i can get them from somewhere where I dont have to pay £20+ on postage, that would be great :D

CB350/400 / Engine rebuild questions
« on: February 11, 2024, 10:15:59 PM »
I've just finished stripping the engine, just the valves to do. What are the main things I should check for? The bike has done 28k miles.

I'm already planning on getting new big end bearings etc and replacing the cam tensioner and cam chain.

The primary chain seems fine. How much play should there be?

The pistons seem fine to me, how should I judge if I need to get some up sized ones?

Some of the crankcase bolts were a bit naff and one rounded off, does anyone know anywhere that does some good quality replacements?
I've found these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262689167997 are allen heads fine? I cant seem to find any hex bolt sets.

CB350/400 / Primary shaft removal.
« on: January 08, 2024, 09:53:01 PM »
Im currently stripping the engine and following the haynes manual for it. Ive been trying to remove the primary shaft but it feels like the nut needs a hell of a lot of force to undo.

Is there a way to hold it in place? I've still got the pistons connected and it seems like they're holding it in place when I try to undo it.

Whats the best way to undo the bolt holding the primary shaft in?

CB350/400 / Idle sticking at around 2500-3000
« on: September 22, 2021, 08:07:24 PM »
When the bike is warm enough to have the choke off it idles fine at roughly 1200 but then when I rev to 6k and higher or after ive been riding for 10 mins or so the idle gets stuck at 2500-3000 even with the throttle fully closed, I'll have to blip the throttle to try to get it to settle back down and sometimes that doesn't work. When it does it while out for a ride as soon as I start letting the clutch out it goes right back down to near idle.

I had the carbs sonic cleaned and had new kits put in them so they are stock. I've just installed some new inlet intake rubber connectors and gaskets. But since I've already got the carbs off is there anything I can check in the carbs themselves to double check its nothing in them before I connect everything back up.

CB350/400 / Dipped beam voltage cutting out.
« on: May 25, 2020, 01:41:25 PM »
Back again with more electrical issues. I've got everything sorted now bar this low beam issue. I get a good voltage reading on my multimeter at the hi-beam and low beam connecters in the headlight bulb holder but when I make contact between the bulb and low beam wire the voltage cuts out. The bulb works fine as the hi-beam wire lights up each filiment when I test them. I get the same voltage at the switch on the bars but this also cuts out when I make contact between the bulb and low beam wire. Has anyone had issue similar to this? Or has an idea of what might be wrong?

CB350/400 / Clutch adjustment
« on: March 26, 2020, 06:26:26 PM »
I replaced the clutch plates a few months ago and ive been trying to set the clutch up to my liking but I've had to put the bar end and clutch end bolts really far out to get the clutch to disengage fully. I've tried adjusting the screw and lock nut on the arm mechanism but have only been able to move the biting point about half way from the bar. I know this isnt right.

Is this a sign that the clutch spring bolts aren't tight enough?

What is the typical amount each clutch adjustment bolt should be screwed in?

CB350/400 / Cb400 four indicator wiring
« on: March 08, 2020, 12:41:45 PM »
I have a few issues with the wiring that I just cant get my head around so wanted to see if anyone has had any similar problems. The indicators arent working. There is voltage on the black and gray wire going out/in the indicator repeater and im getting a voltage reading on the gray wire at the switch on the bars but when I flick the switch to left and right I lose the voltage. The headlight and brake light turn on so I know the wiring is working.

CB350/400 / Rear brake retaining spring.
« on: January 05, 2020, 04:35:37 PM »
I've referenced some pictures and It appears that I have the retaining spring next to the rear brake lever in the right place but there still seems to be quite a bit of play in the brake lever. The adjuster nut on the wheel end is compressing the spring that end quite a lot and if I keep turning the nut to take out the play it will be fully compressed.

Could anyone upload some pictures of the 2 springs so I can compare?

CB350/400 / Dunstal replica exhaust
« on: November 03, 2019, 06:11:45 PM »
Has anyone had experience with the dunstal replica silencers such as the the ones listed on classicbike shop: https://www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=dunstal . Have you had any issues with the inlet adapters or have they been fine?
