When I removed mine I used a cordless Impact tool to undo the hex bolt. I did not encounter the turning problem if your is turning sounds sas if it should undo with a bit of wedging.

Iirc a suitable sized brush stale has been used by members in the past to prevent the rotation. I believe it's inserted down the fork leg to jam the inside part. Never had to do it myself so you might find it via the search facility.

I assume you have removed the spring.

I had some new tools from Wendy for my recent birthday - undecided between Metric & Imperial so she went for the safe option. ;D ;D ;D

Edible ones!

I took my bike in today to have the oil pump seals changed and get a set of genuine Honda exhaust mounting studs fitted to replace the rust prone homemade junk currently in place.
The mechanic had to tell me he would only try so hard if any are very stubborn, lest they snap off. If that happened where would I stand though?

A local engineering firm Helicoiled four of my head studs on the 500  I snapped three , removed four, left one for them - one is fractionally out of alignment so the new Delkevic clamps would not fit one pair of studs.

I used my originals that have more clearance. They skimmed my head as well - they did a brilliant job removing only a few thou to get rid of a couple of marks near where the head gasket seals the bores leaving a mirror type finish. It cost more than I expected tbh.

Nice one, dead jealous but hopefully on the way back to getting out on the bike, left thumb joint replace, now some rehab and then the throttle hand later in the year.

Cheers

Dennis

Yikes Dennis - hope the operation is a 100% success.

Great photos John - aside from Matlock on a Sunday there are no local biker meet pubs that I know of - decades ago there was a pub out near Longford I think it was The Ostrich - now a Private House.

I last visited the pub about four years ago - the pub seemed to be popular with overseas bikers that day.
Photo is from FB page.

I'm going to dismantle the points plate to clean it up. Ken is sending me some proper screws to replace the Allen Key Headed ones to prevent overtightening.

I agree David the main three back plate screws are pretty central. It the CB ones that are at the extreme end, I will see if there is a make on them when I strip down the plate.

CB500/550 / Re: NGK plugs for 500
« on: May 15, 2024, 10:07:59 PM »
Ted, if you can find any D7EV are the dogs doodads for the 500, it should have had newish D7EA in it when you got it, D7ES is the original and not available the A is same as S according to NGK. You should not be using the R type
So a resistor spark  plug when you have resistor plug caps does this cause a problem somehow ?

So far nobody knows. Why did you choose 'R' plugs?

I have no idea, I can't remember when I bought them either.

I do have a set of Denso X22ES-U plugs.

I think my bike had  NGK D7EA fitted .

I have no idea when or where I bought them - I have a set of new NGK DR7EA plugs.
DS show the 500 plug as NGK DR7ES.

Can I use these DR7EA no idea what the S means compared to A ?

I'm sorry to read about the loss of your sister and other family bereavements Bryan you have my deepest sympathy/empathy.

I know you are younger than me but sadly I suspect it's what the future holds for those of us lucky enough to still be around.
The days of Weddings & Christenings seem to become outnumbered by Funerals not to mention ill health encroaching on friends & family members.

In the last five years I've tried to be more pragmatic about life in general often smiling about stuff like "Looking on the bright side of Life" counting my blessings etc. I have no religous beliefs to fall back on for support when things become heavy, I'm fortunate enough to have a few close long standing friends.

There is something quite cathartic and supportive about sharing with virtual friends when we go through tough times to know you are not alone.

Call me a vandal - I put my valve in an electric drill using an old screwdriver holding it as a cutting tool. I kept away from the very edges then finished the job with 400 grit Wet & Dry.
That’s quite reassuring Ted. I will continue Dremelling for now then. You don’t say if the bike ran or not after you did this though; I assume it did :-)

Yes it ran and still does - I've used this method for decades on mainly on car engines in the days of leaded petrol.

I had a similar damaged valve on my 400 exhaust valve - just the one like you.

I found a good used valve that (Steve at 400fourbits) I did not need to have refaced so it was an inexpensive fix.
I was able to do a normal had grind presumably as it was a standard factory cut valve.
