CB350/400 / Exhaust studs issue
« Last post by Athame57 on Today at 06:49:27 PM »
I thought the lengthy rust prone exhaust studs 'on the 400/4' were a buzzing fly and plain got on with it. But seeing the genuine ones on the DSS site I realise I've detected what might be another home made part some bum down the owners list added. The rear brake rod and speedo cable grommet on the front fender are other things I inherited from this bodger.  ::)
These things are 3 11/3 long, does anyone know the length of originals?
I'll get a set somewhere along the line but at £55.00 a full set it will have to wait a month or two, other priorities first, I might take the trouble to cut these back a bit for now (maybe  :-\

A lot of the time the old copper outer exhaust gaskets set like dark concrete and look like part of the head taking severe prodding and levering to remove, many times i have found 2 gaskets in the hole!

Maybe for those of you that like a decent ride out.

Paraffin is a lot less flammable than petrol. I always used Paraffin in the past, but now I ride less miles I just use aerosol chain cleaner and chain lube.

No, they'll be fine George as the clamp down into the copper exhaust gaskets
Thanks Julie, point seen. Those exhaust gaskets though were one of the things that were missing when I first got Elen six years back, the teeth weren't missing like most of mine though!  ;D It took me a lot of finding out, as was the case with the starter clutch you told me I needed to get as well.  ;)

Misc / Open / Re: Best way to lubricate none O ring bike chains question?
« Last post by Skoti on Today at 02:38:48 PM »
Aye Gareth,

the https://www.chainmate.co.uk/ appears to lube the chain on the outside.

But back to the Putoline stuff, as you say It is a bit dodgy messing around with petrol to clean your chain then boiling it up in the big lube tin using a gas stove, I try to be careful, but maybe paraffin would be safer?  What do others use?

Thanks for your concern tho.

Thumbs up for the big flat tin of Putoline chain wax, I use it on my Commando.

I brush the chain off with petrol first then it dry and boil it in the tin using a camping gaz stove in my garage.
Hang up to cool off and set the wax and your good to go for 500-1000 dry weather miles.

Chainmates a clever idea, but on my F1 that runs an O ring chain I stuff a bit of cardboard box up between the main stand and wheel to catch over spray mess when applying Silkolene chain lube.
Cardboard costs nowt...

Oh, BTW is it not the norm to apply chain lube on the inner run of the chain so the oil is flung out thru the chain when in operation?

Yes, always apply lube to the inner run of chain. 👍 Lube applied to outside run of chain just gets flung off easily.

Skoti, you make me nervous using petrol to clean chain , then using naked flame on camping stove! 🤔
