Title: Coil sizes...universal or not?
Post by: Athame57 on July 25, 2020, 01:24:49 PM
There is nothing worse than finding something you've spent a lot of money on does not fit. I went to fit the new coil I bought of Worlds End MC and it is too short to fit into the brackets, also lacking a single wire terminal on the original....or am I to discover the CB400F of 1976 has a different size coils to a CB400F2 of 1978?

Only the OEM Coils will fit correctly. Aftermarket could be any size so it's pot luck really.

Hi Julie
There is also this tiny single wire terminal on the original and lacking on this replacement, I don't know what that is. I think I had better send this back to 'Worlds End MC ' and try DSS!

Sounds like  a good plan George.

Hi I bought the DSS aftermarket ones for my 500/4 and very happy. On mine each DSS coil had a + and - feed, and I just had to change the end of one DSS adapter lead on each to a female bullet connector.
The DSS mountings were the right length unlike a set I bought on eBay (and returned)

No matter where you buy your coils check that they have the correct primary coil resistance. For contact breaker ignition the resistance should be at least 3 ohms. Any less and you risk arcing of the points with rapid contact breaker wear and condenser damage.

I think 5 ohm is needed for the 500/550 and smaller fours due to lower generator output
