CB350/400 / Re: Wheel Bearing Removal
« on: March 03, 2016, 06:29:07 PM »
To be honest, once the old bearings have been removed by drifting on the inner race (which is the only option) I would never re-fit them in case the balls or tracks have been damaged during the removal process.

New bearings are cheap enough to replace as a matter of course.

I also tend to use the ZZ variety with grease seals on both faces.

The OEM coils on my CB350F were 4 ohm and the replacements from DS were only 2 ohm. While this is workable, if not desirable, with contact breakers it is unacceptable with some electronic ignitions. Boyer Bransden specify 4 ohms minimum.

I ended up wiring ballast resistors in series with the power supply to each coil.

Fair enough. It may be an iffy gauge, but if it reads at all on the Beemer why isn't it reading on the Honda?

Have you tried just sticking your thumb over the plughole during cranking to see if there is any compression at all?

Tricks & Tips / Re: LED Indicators (anyone fitted them?)
« on: March 02, 2016, 11:06:44 AM »
As above!

LED's draw far less current than filament bulbs so the standard flasher unit (which uses the lamp current to heat a bimetal strip causing it to bend and break the circuit) won't operate.

An electronic flasher unit works independently of the current drawn by the lamps so it is ideal for LED's.

If you choose to keep the standard flasher unit then you will need to wire a resistor in parallel with each bulb so that the current needed to operate the flasher flows via the resistor rather than the bulb.

They can be quite bulky.

You can get electronic flasher units suitable for motorcycles too.

when doing the compression test, full open throttle to get proper reading. if one or more is out, put a small dose of oil into each pot and test again. if you get even readings this would be a piston/cylinder issue? if the same (one or more is out (by +- 10%) would point to valve issue?
Hope this helps

....and take ALL the plugs out before you start.

Keep the motor turning over with the throttle wide open till the reading stops rising. All the cylinders should be within 10% of each other.

If you can't get a 12mm adaptor you could, as someone has already mentioned, use a gauge with a tapered rubber adaptor. You just push these into the plug hole as hard as needed to get a seal.

It's called an expander ring.

Adjusting and balancing the carbs should be the last thing you do after all the other engine adjustments.

Are all the valve clearances OK?

Are the plugs gapped correctly and the ignition timing spot on.

It might be worth doing a compression check to see if all the cylinders are roughly the same. This test can pick up worn rings or burns valves.

If everything is fine then you could certainly be looking at an air leak on the intake side.

CB500/550 / Re: DIY engine painting..help!
« on: February 25, 2016, 09:15:46 PM »
I painted the engine cases on my Moto Guzzi but the engine was completely stripped at the time.

I used

1. Jizer to de-grease
2. Clarkes alloy cleaner to remove oxidation
3. Hot dishwasher cycle
4. POR 15 metal ready to etch the surfaces.
5. POR 15 engine enamel thinned with white spirit to spraying consistency.

After

This was  around 6 years ago and the paint is still on.

They set me for a rubber hammer but fortunately I knew they had one in the tool room so it sort of backfired on them.

Mine is a sort of metallic black. I thought it had possibly been re-sprayed as the V5C says it should be green.

Fair comment, but in the kit I got the O rings were actually slightly oversized and no amount of gasket cement could make them fit without kinking.

The advice I would give is to make sure that, whether you buy full kits or just gaskets, the float bowl gaskets are the pre-shaped type rather than just plain O rings.

They can be a pain to seat correctly.
