CB350/400 / Re: Coil sizes...universal or not?
« on: July 26, 2020, 09:06:09 AM »
No matter where you buy your coils check that they have the correct primary coil resistance. For contact breaker ignition the resistance should be at least 3 ohms. Any less and you risk arcing of the points with rapid contact breaker wear and condenser damage.

I am the Technical Editor for Complete Kitcar Magazine and a few years ago I researched and wrote an article n the problems and solutions for the E5 fuel which was just being introduced at the time. Obviously with the introduction of E10 fuel these problems will be exacerbated.

There will be a slight weakening effect due to the extra oxygen included in the fuel mix but at 10% ethanol the standard settings should still be OK. The bigger problems are the corrosive effects of the oxidation and hydration products of the ethanol on metals and the way it attacks the elastomers in the O rings and flexible fuel lines. These effects will be even worse in vehicles stored for longer periods of time.

The FHVBC, at around the same time, did some independent research into the commercial fuel additives supposed to combat the harmful effects of the ethanol on the metallic components. Not surprisingly many of them were completely ineffective but they did find a handful that worked. This information is still available on their website.

Personally I use Ethomix from Frost Restoration and I drain the fuel system before I lay my bike up for the winter. These additives only protect the metal parts so you also need to look for biofuel compatible rubber hoses too.

The FHVBC tested a lot of fuel stabilisers when E5 was first introduced and found a handful that actually worked. I use Ethomix from Frost Restoration and drain the system before I lay it up for the winter.

Not sure about the 750 but on my 350 there are two pins on the back of the badge which fit into spring clips in a bracket on the tank.

I used nylon fishing line slid behind the badge to ease it out of the clips.

the thing about eBay is that items find their natural price on the day of the sale.

If an item sells then the price was right. If it doesn't then the price was wrong and the seller needs to think again.

CB350/400 / Re: Cam chain tensioner bolt
« on: June 07, 2020, 07:49:32 AM »
The tensioner bolt does not actually adjust the chain tension. There is a spring loaded plunger inside which is supposed to do that automatically. The tensioner bolt is there simply to lock the plunger in place once its done the adjustment so it just needs nipping up lightly. The lock nut then secures the bolt.

CB350/400 / Re: cutting back lacquer finish?
« on: June 06, 2020, 07:46:49 AM »
If you're happy with it then leave it.

If you really want to cut it back then, once it's fully hardened, you need to wet sand out any orange peel using fine wet and dry (800 grit perhaps) then move to finer grades (1200 -2000) and finally polish  the surface with Farclea G3, Farclea Finishing Compound and finally Farclea Glaze (or similar products). It's time consuming. Especially if you're doing it by hand.

CB350/400 / Manual cam chain adjuster CB350F
« on: May 30, 2020, 03:51:04 PM »
I fitted one of these manual cam chain tension adjusters to my CB350F. It's a known problem area on the 350 and 400 fours.

It won't help if the adjuster is seized but it will help if it's just weak springs.

It replaces the blanking bolt at the top of the adjuster block and allows you to manually depress the adjusting plunger.

Some people just push a thin screwdriver down there to do the same thing but this is a little more reproduceable.

I'm tightening it half a turn at a time so that I don't over tighten it.

I bought a cheapie set but I checked the calibration and, surprisingly, they were spot on.

I’ve found mineral oil difficult to source, just bought some on  fleabay I’ll likely give in and use semi synthetic in future

David Silver sells Mineral Oil.

A long while back I tried out some UV activated pre-impregnated fibreglass patches. They sell them for things like emergency canoe repairs.

It worked fine on the sunny day I chose.

CB750 / Re: Aftermarket Coils
« on: March 26, 2020, 11:27:13 AM »
Make sure that the coils have the same primary resistance as the originals. (3 -4 ohm).

Coils designed for use with electronic ignition systems have a very low resistance (1.5 ohm) so when the points are shut twice the current will be flowing through the system. I'm not saying that was the reason for your failure but if you fit the wrong coils the points will burn very quickly and you could damage the condensers.
