My 550 f2 is almost ready for the road, so today i started it up to have a little ride up the drive but when i tried to put it in gear it just stalls. I have had this problem before and usually after a couple of stalls the plates free off and are fine after that but this time no such luck. I previously dismantled the clutch and cleaned the metal plates, all seemed good, and i have had it operating properly since. So, two questions, first what causes them to stick in the first place and second will I have to take off the clutch cover? I had the adjuster correct and have tried re-adjusting but no difference. Thanks in advance.

Its the "stiction" of the oil being pressed out of the friction plates under spring pressure. Be a bit mor viscious with it. Put it on the centre stand, put it in gear so the rear wheel is spinning, rev it up with the clutch lever in to about 5000 and stand on the back brake OR tacke the cover off and clutch apart

Bryan is spot on. I had exactly the same issue and this freed it off. A couple of back brake pushes and this should work. Good luck.

I find. Putting the bike in gear. Then when sitting on the bike Shove the bike backwards sharply against the resistance.
A couple of times. That usually works for me.
I did yesterday with my 750. Prior to its first trip after restoration.

tried all the methods but no luck, will have to open it up

Just to confirm it has been working ok since the rebuild but has been stood for a while.

job sorted, took off the clutch cover and dismantled the clutch assy then rebuilt and works fine. Luckily i only had to remove the kickstart to gain access so an easy job, even the gasket was ok as i always use grease on paper gaskets.

not really, just lack of use probably

you could keep the clutch lever in when in storage,
use a cable tie or something to keep the plates free,

Interesting one this - and thankfully not experienced it on any of my 3x 70’s Hondas which have gone 2+ years without turning a wheel. Could it simply be the brand / type of oil used?
