Title: Hanshin coils?
Post by: bike-pusher on September 13, 2014, 04:11:06 PM
Putting this here because I suspect these are CB750 items.

They were on a 400 Four I've just broken up.  They look like OE, and they're fastened properly to the metal brackets with the long bolts that pass through the frame, but...

...they're grey, not black, and branded Hanshin.  They have HT leads which are longer than 400 Four coils usually bear, and so I'm thinking they might be CB750 items.  Does Hanshin ring a bell with anyone?

Yeah, this is what's puzzling me.  They're designed to fit the standard 400 Four mounts, as you can see, they look like OE, but they're a different colour and the HT leads are longer.

CB550?

Nah.  I've seen patterns, and they're just not like this.  They're rarely designed to fit the original coil mounts, either.

I'm just curious, that's all.

Genuine ones are really good quality too. My 1st blue 400/4 did twenty thousand miles with a CDI I made from old colour TV parts. The standard coils were wacked with a 400 volt DC pulse from a capacitor and  never suffered a voltage breakdown of the insulation. The trigger was from the standard points so it was a five minute job to return to standard. I kept the felt thingy oiled and the timing never changed in the 20k miles. I assumed that the 'heel' of the phenolic part that contacts the auto-advance would wear still,  but it didn't.

Ah-ha!  Yes, you may be right.  Wait a minute, though: the 180 degree twins all had two coils, didn't they?  With single HT leads....

Only ones with 180 degree cranks like the  CB250K series The CD175/CB160 had a 360 deg crank and 'wasted' spark ignition system hence single ign. coil , dual HT leads on those models.

Yes, I had a string of 175 twins in the 1990s....  But those were 6v coils.  The CB175 and 200 wouldn't have been, of course.  I'm just startled at the fairly long HT leads and the fact that these coils look made for the 400F carriers.
